Optifast...covered by insurance?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone who has had Optifast prescribed by a doctor have it covered by their insurance?

Just curious. I know Optifast is an approved physician supervised weight loss program by Aetna but I'm not sure if they cover it. It's tough getting a straight answer from them.

Thanks in advance!

Do you mean as preop prep for the band, or on its own?

On its own. Just curious.

My insurance paid for the lab tests, the medical portion and the administrative fees but did not cover the cost of the Optifast liquid itself. That was the most expensive portion of my program. They consider it food and they don't cover it.

I don't think it's covered by my insurance (Aetna). I know that when I was readying receipts for my medical-cost fund reimbursement, it specifically said I could not get reimbursed for any sort of nutritional supplements.

I was on Optifast for 4wks as a preop diet and it was NOT covered. I had to have 6 Meal Replacements a day, each ranging from $3-$3.25. It cost about $17/day for 4 weeks or about $110/wk! Fortunately, you could be on a payment plan to spread out payments over time, but still cost a bundle!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
