No One Told Me About this Lapband Side Effect

Recommended Posts

I have a bad nose... I have always been prone to sneezing. (it is so bad, that I actually have my computer programmed to sneeze when an e-mail comes in).

Since lapband, I have noticed that, while eating, about the time that I have reached my limit, but before I get to that reflux stage, I will have a sneezing attack. It is especially noticable if I am eating a bit too fast.

I know it sounds strange, but once I get that sneeze going, which can easily go 10 or 12 sneezes, if I keep eating after that, even a couple of bites will send me to the pain of over eating. Usually, I am fine and find I am quite satisfied, nearly beyond, if I stop at that point.

I haven't figured the science behind it yet... maybe it is somehow the gas building, tickling my nose, or what... but it seems to be a very real indicator that I am about to cross over into a not so happy place... a "this is your final warning" area.

Anyone else have this sort of thing?

I am too new at this to answer your question about whether I will have that happen, but I do have a bad nose. I wonder if it has anything to do with sinus drainage or something similar. I mean, as you get full, the drainage is running out of places to go so your nose gets irritated. It is just a thought. I can only hope that I will such a stand out signal that it is time to stop eating. Awesome job on your weight loss!

I think what you are describing is what some people call their "soft stop". It's exactly what you talk about...the point where your body knows that another bite or two will send you over the edge.

I wish I had one. I know as soon as I eat that one bite over my limit, but nothing tells me not to put that bite in my mouth. It would save me a lot of pain if I had a soft stop. Consider yourself lucky.

I have read where others hiccup when they reach that point. I'm with Stephanie, I sure wish I had one.

Random sneezing is such an odd issue. I've even heard of people who sneeze like that when they walk out in the sun. From your marvelous weight loss, it must have worked for you. Congratulations Steve!!

Soon after my surgery, when I was very restricted from swelling, I would have a soft burp when it was time to stop eating. I hope I have a tell like that after I have a fill and I'm restricted again. Better that, than eating too much and having a more painful indicator that it was time to stop.

I have never heard of sneezing being a trigger . . . but hey, if it works it works :0)

I get small burps that can make their way up easily as a sign. Hiccups also occur when I am reaching my limit.

Wow, that is weird but pretty cool, I think. Your nose is more or less telling you that you have ate enough and it's time to stop. I bet alot of us out here wishe ours could do the same, I sure know I do. Have you talked to your Doctor about it to see if there is some kind of medical reason behind your sneezing?

I haven't been banded yet, but I read on lots of forums, and there sre many kinds of signs. some people burp, others get a runny nose. A few sneeze. I hope I get a sign as obviou as yours once I get my band.

I get the soft stop of a sniffly nose-----like I need to sniff. I need to quit then, if I let it go, I overeat, and am miserable!!!

No medical background here.....BUT I think it is all related to the production of mucus our bodies do when we are overfull, or stuck on something. Known around here as sliming. EVERYONE does that, not just banded people, when something is stuck, you produce thick gooey saliva, which is done to try to help slick things through. I think when your nose is sensitive that is where you feel the sensation of mucus formation first. And in your case that sounds like the slightest bit makes you sneeze.

If I push past my sniffles, I will get the hiccups, but by then it is usually too late!

What an interesting 'soft spot' for you.

But, it's understandable no one told you about this lapband side effect, as it's more related to your body and not the lapband :cool2:

Kat817 is absolutely correct. Body produces mucus when it needs to help food slide through. Many bandsters get the sniffles when they have eaten too much... they feel their nose running, etc. You happen to have several sneezes. You are lucky you have an obvious sign that you've eaten too much! Look at this as a positive thing!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
