Protein drinks causing diarhea??

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm on my 3rd month of my 6 month diet. I've been doing, so, so. It's been hard, I was a carb addict! :)

I used to skip Breakfast and my nuitritionalist wanted me to have something, so she suggested I try some Protein drinks for Breakfast. So I've tried Designer whey, powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury and another that I'm not sure I've seen on this web site, it's called Lean Dessert. This is by far the best one I've tried, granted I haven't tried many, the other two were good, but this one is killer! I have the chocolate fudge pudding flavor. Now this one compared to Unjury or Designer whey has the 20 grams of Protein, same as the other two. BUT it has 30 more calories, 1 more gram of fat and 1 more carb. Now, first question is. Is this worth the teeny bit of extra calories and fat for the taste after I have the surgery, or should I stick to the lowest amount of fat and calories drink I can find?

ALSO, has anyone else had tummy problems after they tried Protein Drinks? I'm only having one for breakfast and I really like how well it helps keep me full, but every morning I get the rumblies in the tumblies and have to go potty. Just wondering if anyone else went through this and if it got better? I'm thinking I was eating SOOO horrible and carbing out like crazy that maybe the protein is killing my tummy and it will just take a month or so to get used to this type of new diet?

Any thoughts would be great! thanks!

Katie

For your second question, check the nutrition label. Many of the Protein mixes I bought had Fiber added. If that's the case, your body should soon adjust, especially if you're only having one a day.

While I had several options pre-op as far as Protein shakes, for the one week post-op I was on the required liquid diet, we were given one kind to drink, with a second brand as a backup, if we couldn't get the first.

DUH! I never thought about checking the Fiber amount! I was stuck on getting PROTEIN! LOL

I'll go home and check, that's probably it!

Thanks!

Isn't whey Protein in regular milk? Just curious because I have never had a problem with milk. THANKS

Katie

I don't have it either but it seemed the combination of the whey in the powder which is concentrated, and the skim milk really caused my distress. Soy was much easier on my stomach. Still is.

I wish. To be honest, I'm in ned of some diarhea. This Constipation is killing me! When I used to eat (lolz), I used to go every day...now it's once a week!!!

To answer your question, it probably isn't causing diahrea, but the change in your diet is messing your stomach up... order should restore soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
