Disappointed

Recommended Posts

I haven't been here for a while because I was not a candidate for lapband because of my nissan surgery and other abdominal surgeries. I was a candidate for other forms of bariatric surgery but I did not want to go that route. Anyhow my doctor sent me to a nutritionist on August 13th and she put me on a Protein sparing modified fast. So today, after 7 weeks I am down 30lbs. It is very stringent however, I will give it my best shot and hope it will pay off. She said last Monday that I should be at goal in about 12 more weeks. So unless I once in a while lurk I probably won't be posting much. GOOD luck to all that were lucky enough to get the band!

Best wishes to you, Micatee. I really hope this works for you. Has she said how this works for long-term WL? I'm sorry that you have problems that hinder you getting the surgery you want. Unfortunately the band can't be an option for everyone for one reason or another. Was the sleeve an option for you?

Take care and again, lots of best wishes to you!

Yes, the sleeve was an option but I really wanted the lapband. The PSMF is made up of Protein, certain green vegetables, excersise, journaling, and tons of liquids. I take prescription potassium with supliments of a multi Vitamin, Calcium, and magnesium. I go for blood work every 2 weeks so far and caloric intake is about 500 cal.

More than likely, when I reach goal I will be low carbing, Portion Control and excersise to maintain my weight loss. My nutritionist said once I get at goal they will have to slowly reintroduce me to allowed foods.

This is not a liquid fast ............and really anyone interested should see a doctor that is why I feel uncomfortable to give the specifics of what I am eating.

This is the hardest thing I have ever done, however seeing the results on the scale really help me get through another day! :)

Hang in there, Micatee.

Thanks for the specifics you feel comfortable giving. I agree with you about getting too specific. This really should be supervised.

I do really, really hope this works for you.

There is a sleeve forum on here now if you wanted to look into it further. I'm hearing good things about it. Better even than banding. Yes it does take some of your stomach but it's not re-routing things like bypass does.

Take care and let us know how you're doing!!

Oh and I just re-read my last post and it sounds like I'm pushing surgery! I'm not! Sorry if it comes across like that.

I never thought I'd do surgery but between the constant hunger and my portion sizes (because I was so hungry), nothing else worked for me. I guess I just wanted you to know about the sleeve in case you need to look at surgery again. I'm REALLY hoping this works for you. I know a lot of us wish we didn't have to have surgery.

Again, sorry if it sounds like I'm pushing. I'm really not!

Hi there. I did the Protein Sparing Modified Fast last year without the supervision of my doctor. It was a rather dangerous undertaking even if I did lose 23 lbs in one month.

Basically, you do this fast while eating mainly Protein, hence the protein sparing term. I became obsessed with my caloric intake and had a horrible fear of going over 400 calories per day. I felt like an obese anorexic.

My research on it then led to the Kimkims diet and I'm sure you've heard the horror stories about that. Well, all this dieting and such low calorie intake wreaked havoc on my metabolism. My PCP has now diagnosed me as Metabolic Resistant, or Insulin Resistant.

Now, to kick start the fat burning (I was banded in June and was losing VERY slowly) I've had to drop my carbs to 20 grams per day. The scales are finally starting to move, but it's still a huge struggle.

I'm glad to hear that you've been under the supervision of your dr. and you're getting the bi-weekly blood work. Just be careful and don't fear good healthy vegetables. Now that you're on this diet, however, once you reach goal, it will be VERY important to SLOWLY introduce carbs again. Otherwise, the weight will jump back on in a flash. I'm not trying to discourage you or scare you, just want you to be aware of the risks involved and I had to learn the hard way. Good luck!

I know my nutritionist said that it will take at least 12 weeks to start introducing slowly the right carb related foods. Yes it will be a struggle but I have to give it a fair shot.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
