Port "problem"? - anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is unusual or not or if anyone else had this. I am 9 days post-op and this morning I noticed some blood under the strips covering the port incision. It isn't bright red but rather a dark, rust color. I called the nurse and she said it was normal. Just some seepage. It is the only incision that has any pain/soreness at this point. Plus - and this is a super YUCK - I can feel the port.:cursing: She told me this is because I wasn't that heavy going in (196) and this happens to others. too. Has either of this happened to anyone else? I tend to freak out at the least little problem.

the incision site for my port was not sewn as well as i thought it should be. i left the original covering on it for 3 days after surgery. started getting sore. took it off and my incision was bright red and looked infected. my pcp looked at it and said no problem. well week and a half go by and i am still oozing out of this site. i could force out puss if i sqeezed it. it was also hot to the touch compared to the rest of my stomach. kinda freaked me out. last thing i want is a port infection. anyway, called the dr again. he told me to quit messing with it and leave the puss alone. it was my body healing the wound. now, 5 weeks out it is closed but the retained fluids hardened under the incision and it feels wierd. dr says over time the body will reabsorb the dried fluids and it will soften. don't know if it helps you but that's what my port site has done.

Hey I had the same thing around the same time period. Even today it was draining rusty stuff all over my shirt because I had thought it had stopped so therefore nothing was put on it. But, my surgeon said it was fine. To just keep him posted if it was oozing or red. Which I have neither, and the bruising is almost faded.

hiya, yes this happened to me to exactly the same, it started a week after my op, the same as u dark red blood, when i looked mine is from where the stitch was , i saw my nurse at my gp surgery and she put a mepore dressing back on and said keep and eye on it..i also called dietician at the hospital where i had it done and she said she would inform my surgeon, she also said that it is normal as it can take upto 3 months to heal properly, and just keep an eye on it, i went to my nurse again today and it is healin but very slow.. i can also feel my port too and that is also normal. it has been 4 weeks since my op and it is still bleeding but it is getting less... hope i put ur mind at ease if ur like me u will still be a bit concerned.. all the best denise.x

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
