Yipeee! I have a date

Recommended Posts

I have a date! November 4, 2008:thumbup: I am still confused on some things though. For some reason my Dr. has in his notes that he recomends Gastric Bypass for me. I do not want Gastric Bypass, I am scared of it:eek:. He is saying that with my age, weight and BMI that Gastric Bypass would be better for me. WHY? I don't understand. I have been reading alot on this site and I seen people on here the same size as me and the look to be doing great with the band. He is making me feel like I will not be successful with the band. Did anyone else have this problem? I am still going with the band, I guess I just need some encouragment:blink:It is either the band or nothing!

Thanks for listening:wink_smile:

:cursing:Hi ya and CONGRATS on ya date hun !

U never said what your age/weight/bmi is ?

Mine at my first surgeons appointment was 51 =bmi

A RNY bypass wasnt even discussed , thank god ! and to be honest I wouldnt want it , I just seemed to evasive to me , re-routing me insides etc ewwwww:crying:

I was banded on Friday , Im now 5 days post op and doing fine .

And I have seen lots of big bmi bandsters be successful

But Im also a member of a WLS that is 90% by pass patients and most have done amazing .

Its down to personal preference and disipline id say .

Best wishes

Congratulations!

I would ask the doctor if there is a specific reason he's suggesting bypass. But in the long run, it's your body and your choice. Best wishes!!

Hmmmm....this could be way off but I work at a hospital and I know how some doc's are. They are in it just for the money. Don't get me wrong not all of them are like this, just some. I will have to research this, so don't hold me to it but I think that it costs more to have bypass than it does lap band. ?? Maybe he's pushing it for the money. I don't know ??? Make sure that you make it very clear that you DO NOT want the bypass or you might wake up with the wrong surgery. It happens. I don't want to scare you, just want to make you aware that it wouldn't be the first time if it did happen. For your sake, I hope not. Make sure that he's hearing that you want the Lapband. Make it simple to him if you have to. Plainly state "You do understand that I want the lapband and I am not the least bit interested in bypass??" Make sure that he responds clearly. I even seen on one post that someone suggested that the person write on their tummy "LAPBAND" in marker. That person was having the same problem that you are. If you are still uncomfortable that he's not listening, you might want to go with another surgeon. Afterall, if he's not going to listen and hear what you want as the patient, your after care may not be what it should be. Get the drift? Good luck. Keep us posted.:cursing:

Hey congrats! It is exciting - I am banded one week today! wahoooooooooo and I so far so good - no troubles at all.

I would talk with your Dr. make it very clear that this is what you want and see what his reasons are for him suggesting the other. Important get all the facts. Then if you still dont agree with him - then it might be good to select another Dr.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. The nurse assured me that the Dr. will support my decision and that my decision will not affect my after care, so I hope that she is right. I thought about the money issue as well, cause the band does cost less.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
