Almost ready . . .

I have been working on getting the lap band since last December. To qualify for the insurance I had to do a six month study and lots of tests. FINALLY got approval to proceed so now I meet with my Dr. and his gang to set up my pre-op diet and surgery time. It has been a long process and I've almost changed my mind many times. My husband is not for it, so that makes it doubly hard. Can I ask...is it worth it?

Wow... what insurance?? I hope mine's not like that!!

I go for the seminar tomorrow. So far I haven't told anybody. I just told hubby I had a "heath-related thing" to go to and I would explain more once I heard more.

Why is your husband against it?

You know I have to say that it is worth it. The aches and pains are only temp. and the long term effects are so worth it. My husband seems to be skeptical but I am newly banded and have lost 12 lbs in 10 days and he is starting to already realize that I WILL do this with or without his support. Some might say that your hubby is scared of change but after he sees a whole new you and the way your demeanor will change he should be on board and if hes not... Well if he loves you he will be. You just stick with it and keep on moving forward and it WILL be worth it. (even the aches and pains)

A couple of things . . . he says it is the "easy" way out. That I haven't seem to put enough effort into traditional weight loss. I should just work harder. It's not right to put something artificial in your body.

DePind, you and I are on the same track. I completed all the BC/BS requirements and the requirements of the surgeon's office. I meet the surgeon for the first time on October 8 to discuss medical tests and banding.

Then I wait for insurance approval and if approved, I start the pre-op diet and then I am given a surgery date. Alta Bates thinks I might have a December surgery. We will just have to wait and see.

Well its not easy for everyone to just exercise and change your eating habits when that is all you have known. Tell yourhusband by no means is this the "easy way out". There are aches and pains and risks but all the lap band does is gives you a leg up when learning how to eat again. There is nothing more difficult then making such a serious life changing decision without the support of your spouse, but it is necessary for you to be healthy and I say you need to put yourself first and then your husband.

Good luck!

Blue Cross - Federal

Hm, I have Anthem Blue Cross. I should find out tomorrow how mine will go. The doc at the seminar tonight thinks it's a 3-month pre-op thing.

YEA!

Met with the Surgeon on Thursday 10/2. He is wonderful, Dr. John Marsden here in Fort Worth. He really explained things well and even my husband is more receptive to the surgery now. I am scheduled for 11/10/08. So I'm on my way . . .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
