Stockings?

Recommended Posts

I have been reading in the posts about stockings that people have to wear for surgery. What are they and why do some wear them and others don't mention them?

I had surgery in Mexico in March and had the stockings. They are the white

open toed very strong elastic stocking that they put on you whenever you

have surgery (not sure if it's every surgery, but I remember having them when

I had a c-section in '96). It is to stop clots from forming in your legs. They

put mine on about 1 hour prior to surgery. I wore them for about 24 hours.

To me (and my fat legs!) they were more uncomfortable than the pain from

surgery. They kept rolling down and bunching up behind my knees.

The stockings are strong support hose to help stop blood clots. You'll put them on before surgery. I was able to take mine off the next day. No big deal. Good luck!

Mine weren't really hose...they were these fabric covered plastic things that wrapped around my legs and secured with strong velcro. Then there were tubes that attached to a machine. The machine inflated and deflated the things on my legs (almost like a blood pressure cuff). The nurse said they were "to simulate walking" and thus to keep blood clots down. Mine were mostly annoying and when I was able to get up and walk around for longer periods of time they took them off.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
