Advice Needed! How to chose a surgeon?

Recommended Posts

Deciding to have this surgery is one of the biggest, most life-changing decisions of my life. I am a person who likes to do everything right! Obviously, I want to pick the best surgeon. I need some advice. What questions should I ask? What should I look for?

Here is what I've asked and the information I have as of now.

Surgery Group A:

*Two doctors...one with 1 year experience, one with 5 years experience (no number of operations quoted)

*Lady at office helpful but only answered direct questions, didn't volunteer any extra information

*Recommended by nurse at PCP's office

*No website to speak of

*Program fee of $150 for "educational materials"

Surgery Group B:

*Two doctors each with 6 years experience, over 1000 bariatric surgeries between them

*Lady at office helpful and offered extra information about insurance requirements, number of surgeries, etc.

*Heard only good things about surgeries, but heard that bedside manner may be lacking (from other LBT posters)

*Website, although mostly links to outside information

*No program fee...just co-pays for various appointments such as psych, nutritionist, etc. (I'm assuming I'd have to pay these co-pays with either group.)

What else should I consider? Does anyone have an opinion of which you would chose?

if u are not completely happy with either on from ALL perspectives then please do more homework and keep looking it doesnt hurt. I know some wont let u talk to any of their patients either but it must be for a reason !!!!!!!!! I figured that one out.

it is a life changing experienncing so proceed with caution.

I went to 3 before I found the right guy,.

take care and good luck!!!!!

Besides considering their qualifications, when you're picking a surgeon keep in mind that this doctor is somebody you're going to have to meet with alot for the first year as you are going to need fills. After that you won't have to see them more than once or twice a year. So, pick someone that you like to see, and who likes to see you.

Also, I would pick a group that has a good support system. I get alot from going to monthly support groups at my surgeon's office. I feel very fortunate that I stumbled into the doctor that I picked. He is part of a father and son surgical team. They have two great doctors and great office staff too. I think they've done about 250 bands now. They offer free monthly support group meetings too.

Best wishes to you. I love my band!

There is a link in my sig that is for researching Mexican surgeons but it really applies to US surgeons as well. It gives you a LONG list of questions to ask, what to look for, how to verify info you have been told.

It's pretty comprehensive.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
