j_holm07 0 Posted September 29, 2008 Hello! I am about 3 months post surgery...and losing the weight really well! BUT! I noticed today that my hair seems to be falling out faster than normal. Like, ALOT is coming out. Not in chunks or anything...but just a lot. Is it from lack of nutrition or what is it? I dont wanna bald at 20 years old! rondawood63 0 Posted September 29, 2008 I too am just over 3 months out and had 2nd surgery in that time as well. And last week I had the same thing start with the hair loss. I have been blessed with ALOT of hair so I have a ways to go before I see significant Hair loss, but I have read on this site before that it is normal for alot of people to start losing hair 3-6 months out. And that Biotin is a great supplement to take to help regain the hair loss. I bought my first bottle this a.m., So I am going to see what happens with it. I wonder if it is due to being put under and the effects of that, and the lessened nutrition at first being on liquids so long AND the decreased caloric intake. Just not sure! ThinknHealthy 0 Posted September 29, 2008 The hair loss is simply due to the rapid weight loss. No matter what method you use to lose weight, some people will also lose hair. That's just the price we pay. HOWEVER, from personal experience, I know that the hair will grow back after your weight stabilizes, that is, unless the Hair loss is genetic in nature. Nothing is proven to improve your odds but you should always keep up on your Protein, Multivitamins, and Biotin (get the cheap capsules at Walmart and sprinkle in your shakes). God Bless and Keep up the Good Work.
bla1990 0 Posted September 29, 2008 Make sure you're getting enough Protein...my Mom and I both had surgery, she was able to stomach the Protein supplements that were reccomended for the first few weeks post surgery and lost next to no hair. I on the other hand, could NOT stomach them and lost at least 1/3 of my hair, it's all back now and I feel great. But I was really glad I had super thick hair there for a while. Good luck on your journey, Beth Banded 9/19/07 - down 80+ lbs and now 5 weeks pregnant
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted September 29, 2008 I agree w/ThinkNHealthy...My surgeon covered this in the seminar we had to attend. He said (I'm paraphrasing...but this is the essence) just about EVERYONE will lose hair at 3-6 months out. supplements (Protein, Biotin, multivitamins) don't help. It appears to be the body's reaction to the surgery etc. One of his 1000+ patients needed a wig but then she owned a wig shop. (that's what he said! LOL) They ALL had their hair grow back as full, or fuller, than before. So it's a side effect we have to just get through. Hang in there! You won't go bald yet!

I agree that I think it has to do with the rapid weight loss because this happened once to me before when I was on a Atkins type diet with hardly any carbs and this time I eat from all the food groups and it is still happening........and yes it is month
NY2LAGirl 0 Posted September 29, 2008 My doctor said that the Hair loss is due to drastic caloric intake reduction/surgery He said it is common after WLS or c/sections and usually stops about 9 months out. He also said the same thing as Restless, supplements don't help but said if I was so inclined I should try Biotin which also comes in Shampoo & conditioner form. I was losing tons and tons of my hair and it is about half of what it was before surgery and I consider myself very lucky to have had thick hair prior or I would need a wig for sure! I did go and get a good haircut and it seems to now be slowing up a bit.
jewels41 0 Posted September 29, 2008 I asked my dietician this question when i heard it on here awhile ago. Its from lack of Protein in your diet. You will need more protein .ask your doctor or dietician. thats what I was told anyway
