10 days post op

Recommended Posts

Hello! I had Realize band surgery on Sept 18th, so I am currently 10 days post op. I have a couple of questions I hope someone will give me some opinions on. I am currently in the full liquids phase, so Soups, puddings, yogurts, applesauce, etc.

1. How much is normal to drink/eat right now? My dietician said no more than 8 oz, and that is pretty much what I am doing. A few days ago 1/2 cup with still satisfying me, but now, I want more like 8 ozs. Sound right??

2. I lost 12 lbs on my liquid preop diet, and I lost about 4 lbs in a few days since surgery, but haven't lost anymore for the last week. In fact, this morning, I even was up 2 lbs!!! I think this might have something to do with the salt in some of the Soups, and also haven't had a BM for several days. Is this normal??

I would appreciate any thoughts on these topics... Thanks!!!

Amy

Yup sounds very normal. Most docs will say not to really count weight loss until you are off the liquids and onto regular food. My doctor said to count that as bonus weight. And the longer post op you will probably find yourself hungrier. It's the hardest part for most as you havent had a fill yet. As for the BM, your not eating anything solid so you will probably have much less in the way of BM's. I will sometimes, even six months out, go two weeks withough a BM and will have to do something to help things along  The sodium in Soups can defanitely be an explenation for weight gain. I will carry up to three pounds just in Water retention if I have too much sodium. Up to five pounds during my period. Try some mom to move the bowels and lower your sodium and drink lots of water and see what happens.

Hi,

Banded on Aug. 27th here. It took me about 4 days, and alot of pain, before I had a BM and I finally had to take something. How many days has it been? Also, make sure you check with you dietician about how much you should be drinking. I think mine was more than what you are saying.

Best of luck! Let us know how you are doing!

Be sure to drink a lot of Water. I wouldn't be too concerned about how much you're eating at this stage. You don't have restriction yet until you get a fill and what you are drinking/eating is going straight through to the lower stomach. You need to eat your meals slowly and drink plenty of water and heal at this point. It's perfectly normal not to lose weight and your weight will flex a few pounds off and on, not to worry.

As far as laxatives and/or stool softeners go, I recently tried Miralax at the suggestion of several in this forum and it really is great. Very gentle, effective and best of all .... tasteless!

You're doing great! Best of luck to you on your journey

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
