Anyone know about UHC plan types?

Recommended Posts

Hi there!:)

I'm new to the site and all things lapband. I'm in the process of trying to find an insurance plan that will cover the lapband procedure in cincinnati. My husband's insurance will not cover it, so I'm attempting to find a part time job that offers insurance that will. The surgeon's office manager gave me a list of about 20 companies that they have had success with and one of them is Avon. Now I just need to choose from about 10 different plans from United health care. Does anyone know what type of plan from UHC doesn''t have an exclusion for wls? Any help would be great! I feel like I'm kind of floundering around out here!:thumbup:

Can you ask HR which policies cover WL surgery? Or ask for the booklets and read through them? Each employer is different...so you'd need to find out for your specific area etc, I'd think.

I work in HR - benefits specifically. Ask the doctor's office if they can give you the medical code for your lap band procedure then call the insurance company to see if it will be covered.

I have UHC (United Health Care) - and am working thru the approval process now. When I called the insurance company (in July) they told me that I had to be 40% (or more) BMI - or 35% BMI + other co-morbidite symptoms. When I visited the Dr office (in August) they contacted the insurance as well - they said in addition to the BMI requirements, I would also need a Psych eval, nutritionist consultation and 2 years of medical (weight) records... I am doing my psych eval (Mon 9/29) and my nutritionist consulation (Wed 10/1) - then it will be off to UHC for "approval" (fingers crossed!)

FYI ~ My coverage is 80% (with a max out of pocket of $1600)

Just remember Roxieroo...employers can (and often do) modify policies by excluding certain types of coverage, so that one person's UHC coverage isn't the same as another person's. Sad but true. If your new policy will be similar to Morgan's it sounds good but you are safest to do what PattyK said. Since you are getting the job etc mostly for the insurance; make sure it covers what you want!

(I sure wish it were easier, don't you?)

well, The crazy part is, this is the second job that I've taken to try to obtain the insurance for the lapband. The first was with Macy's credit in Cincinnati. Initially, through heresay, I thought it was covered. After I was hired for part time employment, and got my hands on the insurance info..... oh well, lesson learned! I went to an info. seminar with Dr. Curry's office in Cinti. and spoke with the office manager about what companies in the area DO offer the insurance. She gave me about 15. I already work 2 part time jobs, What's one more??! I guess I'll just keep going down the list till I hit one that works. The weight isn't going anywhere. Anyone in the Cint. area know of a good option? Thanks much. My background is in sales, but I can pretty much do whatever is necessary.

You're luck that PT jobs even offer insurance; down here they usually don't! Good luck!

I know!

I was pretty surprised myself. I will need to pay for it, but the monthly payments aren't too out of whack. Fingers crossed!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
