mommy2tyler928 0 Posted September 26, 2008 Hello all. My name is Tiffany. I am 27 years old from NE Ohio. I am a wife and mother to 2 children, and a step daughter. I am in the research stage right now, considering if lap band is the right option for me. I would like some input from those who have been there as to what to expect in the beginning. What are the requirements to qualify, what testing is generally done (i know that it does vary) What is required leading up to surgery as far as diet, restrictions, etc.. I have read all about the surgery it self, but they don't tell you the down falls of what to expect before. And the restrictions, etc. I want to be well informed making this decision, as it will be a life changing decision. I have had problems with my weight for many years, unsuccessfully losing weight, despite diet and exercise. Now is the time to make a change. And i feel this may be my best option. I would Love to hear from others who have been there Thanks in advance Tiff:smile2:
HeatherO 7 Posted September 26, 2008 Hello Tiff, I am from NE Ohio as well. There are so many variations on what individual doctors require. Have you met with a surgeon or went to a support group yet? That is usually the best place to start.
mommy2tyler928 0 Posted September 26, 2008 I have not met with anyone as of yet. I am waiting to get the information packet. To read it all over, and trying to do as much research as i can to see if this is something i really want to do. Since your in this area, any suggestions of a surgeon? Who did you go to, what hospital, etc. I am from Leavittsburg, u? I have been thinking about this for some time, but have just started to get serious about it, actually admitting to my self that i am to big. I need to do this, or something NOW. I really didn't think i would qualify, but the lap band site says i may... It was a real kick in the butt, combined with the new season of biggest loser and my weight is comparable with those (i wanted to try and get of there, but have never taken that step.) Not that i ever would expect to get on the show, but i would definately take advantage of it if i could.
grannytwinkie 0 Posted September 26, 2008 Most insurance companies require that you be on a "physician assisted diet" for at least six consecutive months in the last 3 years. You don't have to show a weight loss, just that you have tried with your physician to lose weight. Then you go through clearance with cardiology, pulmonology and gastrology. I also had to go through 2 sleep studies to determine if I had sleep apnea, and since I did what the severity was. I started the process in January 2008 and am scheduled for surgery on October 7th. I am on my 4th day of a two week liquid diet prior to surgery, which most times is ok, but get really hungry so have to distract yourself from it
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted September 26, 2008 Tiff, I think the first step would be to contact your insurance, see if they COVER the lap band (assuming you aren't planning to pay for yourself!) and what their requirements are. Get them in writing! THEN pick a surgeon or two from your insurance list and hit some seminars. They are very informative and you get an idea of the surgeon and his/her staff...by then you'll have a good idea if you want to pursue it or not!
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted September 26, 2008 My ins didn't require me to have a diet etc....some require 3 months' exercise, some the 6 month diet, some just want medical records etc etc...so best bet is to start there and work forward!
