1 day post op and scared

Recommended Posts

Most cases I have heard of, in the years since I have been on here---the surgeon as well as the anesthesiologist are PRO active on the post surgery nausea, rather than RE active as has been in this case.

Sounds like some of you are using the same Dr. I would ask up front to be given preventative meds.

As has been said, there are multiple things they can give through the IV while you are hospitalized, as well as the patch behind the ear (be sure to remove it as told, or it can have some wierd side effects!).

Then when you get home there are meds that can be dissolved under the tongue, or on the tongue---even suppositories should it come to that.

There is no need for this to scare someone off of the surgery!!!

Personally I had no nausea, but have had virus' since then and used the anti nausea meds---it is definitely something to keep on hand and to discuss with the Dr. PRIOR to it happening.

Many of us learn that lesson the hard way!!! LOL

Hope you feel better soon, and that the other upcoming surgeries go very smoothly.

Kat

Hi there, I'm really sorry to hear that you are suffering. Have you been using the GasX strips? I've had more gas a few days after than I had at first which is kind of strange I think. You might try a few hours of ice chips followed by a mult-symptom rolaid chewable that you bite off and chew in really small chunks. It helped me yesterday with a titch of heartburn and gas. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with sticking to fudge pops, ice cubes, and anything else frozen you can get down in small amounts.

I hope it gets better for you. Keep a positive mindset and you will heal faster because stress releases powerful hormones that can make you worse off than you already are so just try to relax and take care of yourself!

oh, also I don't know if you are continually keeping the ice pack on our abdomen but it really helped my swelling to go down during the first three days. I kept it full of ice and on that largest incision for at least 72 hours.

I am now 1 day post-op and doing ok for the most part. I have TERRIBLE gas pains tho. I've been popping the gasX strips like they are going out of style but they don't seem to be helping much. I've also been trying to walk walk walk. If I didn't have the gas pains, I would be doing so much better. Anyone have other suggestions for the gas pains? Thx!

OK, I have to defend Dr. K.

He is NOT reactive, he is quite PROACTIVE. I went for my pre-op appt and had two scripts for ANTI-NAUSEA meds and pain meds. Those were filled before I left the hospital.

It is clearly stated in his literature he provides well before surgery to help prevent nausea. It is listed in the orders as well.

A patch was placed behind my ear and numerous stomach upset and nausea meds were pushed through my iv.

This is Dr. K's protocol.

The first two days post op were pure HELL for me. I don't do pain well and I was depressed with the realization that my love affair with food was pretty much over.

Now, a couple days later, I feel a lot better and very positive.

Everyone reacts differently - from what I read before the surgery, I thought this would be a piece of cake. Not true and quite a shock. But I'm different than the other people I read about.

Dr. K was one of the most caring, gentle people I've ever met. And he was very, very proactive about nausea and vomiting. In fact he mentioned more than once how important it is NOT to vomit.

Thanks - I just had to defend such a good man.

Sorry, but NONE of the gas medicines have even touched my gas. Now I have this weird almost burp that is happening. It hurts. I can feel a burp coming, but it won't come all of the way up. I finally put a heating pad on my shoulder (that is where my gas pain is) and that seems to have helped a little. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi all,

I was banded yesterday and I have been trowing up uncontrollably. I cant even keep my saliva down. Had an upper GI done today and there is swelling on my stomach at the band site. Anyone have this happen. I am scared because they say to keep hydrated. Help.

Was this your first time having surgery? If so, any other time that you have surgery, you want to mention that you had a really bad reaction to the anesthetic and will need meds from now on. I had a reaction the first time I had surgery and have asked for something since then. I hope that you continue to make progress in feeling better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
