What I didn't know or expect before surgery....

Recommended Posts

Hello All, I was banded on Tuesday, the 23rd. I planned to come home Tuesday evening. I thought I understood what would be happening. I was wrong. In recovery I had a hard time coming out of the anesthesia. Not sure if I tried to wake up too quickly or what. The nurses seemed to be surprised I was awake so soon. And then the nausea started and never seemed to end. I spent most of the afternoon throwing up or dry heaving or whatever it is called. I felt like my chest was on fire. That continued through day 2. I spent the night in the hospital which was good beacuse I couldn't keep anything 'down' and bad because I couldn't get any sleep at all. When I finally went home [yeah!!!] I was sooooo tired...and still throwing up and then there was the gas. I'm really not a whiner. I had natural child birth with two 9 lb babies so I can handle the pain. But I wasn't prepared for the throwing up part and the tiredness. So future banders....be aware and be prepared!

Oh i'm so sorry to hear that. Sounds like you & the anesthesia were not a good mix. I know people tell you this is a breeze, nothing to it. Some that's true, others it's not. We are all different. I would imagine vomiting after being banded is an aweful experience. One thing I can assure you, it DOES and WILL get better! :smile2:

I'm sorry to hear that! I had my gall bladder removed in November of last year and experienced a similar reaction coming out. So when I went in for my band I made sure to tell the anesthesiologist that whatever cocktail they were giving me to put a double shot of anti nausea meds in it. They even gave me a seasick patch beforehand. In fact, my lapbad surgery was a heck of a lot easier to recover from. I had surgery on a Monday and I was working, albeit from home, on Wednesday.

Has the vomiting/heaving caused any band slippage?

Wow! So sorry to hear of the trouble you had. I was sooooo afraid of throwing up after my surgery. Thank God all I did was dry heave. That was bad enough. Trust me, I took that nausea medicine every 4 hours just to keep from throwing up. It also helped me to sleep. I hope you get to feeling better.

Wow sounds awful. I too woke up very fast, was alert very quickly, surprised recovery room nurses, but never had any nausea or vomiting. I guess the drugs they give for that worked on me and didn't on you. How awful!

They would have had you do a barium swallow in the hospital where you drink the pink Fluid and they take pictures, right? If you had a slip it would show up. You would also know if you were unable to ingest anything. If you still have any nausea, you should take some meds to prevent vomiting if at all possible. Are you still having vomiting episodes now or has it passed.

I came out of anesthesia really slow and late. My husband was worried because they said I would be in my room in 30 minutes but it was more like 1.5 hours. I also evidently vomitted during surgery as well because the side of my mouth, neck and around my back had a purple stain from whatever they must have had inside my stomach. It was like a dark die and it actually took a couple of days to wear off.

I guess anesthesia affects us all differently. I hope you are recovering well now.

Hi Health4Life! Thanks for the encouragement. Today is 100% better but I am starving! The Isopure zero-carb drink is just not cutting it! We're Colts fans as well! Went to the game on Sunday...on the liquid diet, no less! Now if they would only WIN at home!

I am sorry you went through that. I was fortunate. They gave me nausea medicine before and after surgery. My surgeon also sent me home with a prescription for anti-nausea medicine.

I also hear everyone having a barium swallow test. I didn't have to do that before leaving the hospital and I am lucky for that also. THAT stuff make me heave BIG TIME! I almost didn't make it through my pre op test.:smile2:

I am so sorry that you were so sick, but glad that you feel better. I had a reaction after one of my previous surgeries. I didn't know if it was the pain or the medicine, so I started telling them ANYTIME I had surgery about that reaction. Today the gave me a cocktail of everything that they could. They put 2 or 3 medicines in my IV and a patch behind my ear. I also have a prescription medicine at home that disolves on my tongue. My surgeon's office called that one in just in case. They wanted me to avoid vomitting at all costs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
