New2Site : Suggestions for Companies & Dr

Recommended Posts

I actually had Gastric RNY back in 2001 (Went from 440lbs to 215 and stayed -but never got skin removed yet)

My Husband has decided that he wants to get the lap. We tried last year on his insurance and they do not cover this at all.

I am currently looking to go back to work full time here in the KC MO area and wanted to know if anyone could give me some companies that actually cover it. Even if there is alot of paperwork etc.

He is 450lbs, has been on breathing machine for over 2 years now, and has all the hard core Dr documentations for several medical reasons.

I have retail, corp, tech, and sales background (Sprint/ Verizon etc)

But really , any help on companies to look into would be great.

4 years after I got mine done and paied through insurance (working for Verizon) they stopped covering it all together.

The year before I got married Sprint stopped covering it.- Get this - they said on the HR Benifits call that there were too many deaths and complications to cover this. I know when I got my RNY done death was like a 3% chance. - Oh but then a month later I get my HR SPRINT health newsletter in the mail and right on the cover - Obesity kills hundreds of thousands of people a year... etc. etc.... I just rolled my eyes- so glad they were worried about that 3% :girl_hug:

Crazy !

Anyway - any help would be appreciated - (I don't see spell check so please grant me some slack on that)

THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

I'm in the St. Louis area. My insurance (Alliance BC/BS) paid for my Lap Band Surgery. It took them a while to approve it but so far they have covered everything but my co-pays. It depends on what your company chooses to exclude in their coverage because not all BC policies cover bariatric surgery.

Good luck, I hope you find the solution and the right doctor for your husband.

Our insurance is through the federal government. I work for a University here in St. Louis but we have our insurance through my dh's job.

Keep in mind that each company is differant in what they are offering. I had looked into being banded 4 years ago it was not covered and then one day I happen to read the updated policy and found that it was covered. Also each insurance company is differant as to what is required. My wife and I had United Health Care Prochoice and was aproved in less than 30 days. I have heard others have had to do weight loss for 6 months before insurance would approved. I can forward you a copy of a letter that we had used to get approved. It might help you in getting things in place and ready for when you get insurance. Just e-mail me your address.

I have several friends in KC. The company I work for is doing work on the Royals Stadium.

Chris

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
