Cannot seem to burp

Recommended Posts

I was just banded Sep 18, 2008. Everything seemed to be fine. I'm still on liquids. I see the Dr. tomorrow for my 1 week appt. I believe that he will release me to soft foods then. As I was on full liquids. There were times where I feel like I want to burp and I can't. I feel it coming up and then I get a pain in my chest where it won't come up. When I asked about it I was told to walk and it will come up, but it doesn't. Has anyone ever had this problem just being banded?

Yes, I have and others have too. Sometimes you get it back and sometimes you don't. Four months later I still can't burp but it is not painful like it was the first couple weeks. I just feel the sensation and nothing comes up. I tend to hiccup a lot instead. (I hiccup when I am hungry, when I am full and when I need to belch)

I have experienced that, too. I used to be able to make myself burp easily anytime I needed to. But since I got my band it simply doesn't work. Unfortunately I can still swallow air (not on purpose!) but I don't have a way to bring it back up again. I think this is the reason I am experiencing more gas... on the other end...

I don't know. I even had my husband pound my back like he was burping a baby and it didn't do me any good. I am learning to be extra careful not to swallow air because it kinda hurts when I have an air bubble in there that I cannot burp out!

It doesn't bother me anymore now that there is no pain with it. The only thing I know of that can be taken to make a person burp is Alka Seltzer and I would think that product is a huge no-no for bandsters. It would probably just make you hurt more...and like soda, it would seem possible that it would stretch your pouch.

Did you have a hernia repair too? Just curious because I had thought that my problem was related to my hernia repair.

I had a bit of a problem for a while as well, but can now do mini burps the majority of the time. They are tiny, no one can hear them and are just in my stomach to my throat. I have to do this after I drink and sometimes after eating. It helps to relieve pressure . . . but I am not sure if there is an anatomical difference that lets some people do this but not others.

Gas-X strips that dissolve on your tounge might help if you are uncomfortable . . . and they are band friendly as well.

Please check with your doctor about this. But I remember when I was growing up and they didn't have all these heartburn medications, my mom would mix a little baking soda in a small amount of Water and it would cause her to "rift" (burp) and she would feel better. I think there are instructions on the side of the baking soda box. But again, check with your doctor.

the gas-x strips made me gag, so I found some gas-x chewables (and they're extra strength!!) that work well also.

I had my DH pat my back from my belly to my shoulders in little circles (just like we burped our son) and it helped alot.....I also tapped my chest and could get some burps out that way as well.

Oh...and going from reclining to standing pretty quickly can usually bring up some air for me as well.

Some warm broth or tea might help to soothe your band enough to get out a burp, too.

I'm 2 weeks post op now and I hardly get that burpy feeling anymore

Walk Walk Walk, thats the best thing for burping, sometimes I would walk around the house for 15 minutes, but it would happen eventually.

I was banded on 9/10 and wasn't able to burp until this past week. I was so relieved. Hang in there.

Burps don't get past my band. Now if I've got some air in my pouch, I'll burp it up, but I don't burp from my stomach anymore. My band doc said that the volume of gas from a burp can't pass through my band. Needless to say all my gas releases come from the other end now...:bolt:

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
