Anyone up for training for their 1st 5k?

How is everyone doing?

I started week 4 last night. I did week 3 for 7 days as I felt like I was not ready for the run of 5 minutes on week 4. So last night I thought ...just go for it. Don't psych yourself out. I decided to lower my running speed. I had been walking at 3.0 and running at 4.5. Last night I walked at 3.0 and ran at 4.0 and I did the whole thing!!!! I was so happy! That's like 16 minutes of running! I am so excited about this. It has always been a dream of mine to run and now I see it is coming true...slowly but surely.

Just a suggestion to anyone that is struggling...maybe lower your speed a bit. One you have built up the stamina later you can increase the speed.

Take care everyone and happy running!

Great advice BarbBee. There is not reason for speed and everyone is different. Some people try running long distances or to fast to quickly and end up hurting themselves. You are doing great. Congratulations on moving on to week 4.

I just looked at the podrunner website to check out the run for week three. I'm a little nervous of the three minute run. I may do what you did and spend some extra days on week three before moving on to week four. But that is one thing I like about this trainning program. It's flexible that each person can adjust it to meet their own needs. There is no pressure to actually complete the 10 week program in 10 weeks or 15 weeks. I love it.

Keep it up Podrunners.

Count me in.. I've read about the couch to 5K before but was daunted by the keeping track of time and all. I just went to the podcast site and am listening to the music. I like this! I am sure I can do this! I even looked up 5K races in my area.. holy moly there are alot for being November/December. (I'm in CT) I think I will wait til Springtime to actually run one.. I'm kind of a wuss!

Will we just keep posting here for support? or what? Maybe we need a name for our running group! Lapjoggers or something, LOL.

I just wanted to drop in and wish you all the best. I ran my first 5k on Sunday and it was amazing. I cried and cried after I crossed the finish line and I couldn't stop running, I just kept going!

YOU CAN DO THIS! I LOVE PODRUNNER! I am planning my next 5k for Thanksgiving...a Turkey Trot 5k!

i'm wondering if anyone has taken their resting heart rate and what the number was. i was told that the lower the number the healthier the heart. well, my resting heart rate is around 100 beats per minute which is NOT good. my 60+ year old dad has a rhr of 65!

Dwrd...

Thanks for the podrunner info! I am so pumped! I hope to be cleared to start running when I see my doc next week and I will start up and join you all. I have been eyeing a Rudolph Run 5k in early December.

Thanks for the thread and good luck to everyone!

Ok...I posted on the this thread awhile back, and then faded off to the ether. I finished the Couch to 5K and I just raced for the first time at our city's Turkey Trot. But, it wasn't a 5K...it was a 4 miler!!!! And I did the entire thing running!!! I finished the program on November 21 and I was only running 2.7 miles (a 5K is 3.1 miles). Then this Sunday, the 23rd, and Tuesday, the 25th, I bumped up my distance to 3.2 miles. And then today, I increased it another .8 miles. I never ran that far until today. I had no idea if I could make it, but I did. My God daughter was supposed to take my picture as I crossed the finish line, but she thought it would take me longer and so she wasn't ready...at first I was a little upset, but...hey, I finished faster than she expected.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
