Banded 5/21/08

Recommended Posts

I was banded 5/21/08 and have had 3 fills. Weight loss has been slow. A total of 25 lbs (15 was from my pre-op diet).

Yesterday I experienced my first major stuck. I was eating steak when I got the sharp pain in the chest. Hiccups/Burbs relieved the pain momentarily, but the food wouldn't pass and eventually came back up. I have had bread stuck before but the hippups/burps would relieve the pain and I would be fine.

I thought I should join the forum so I would think about my band more often. Since I don't have much restriction, sometimes I forget about it and I don't take my time to chew and then something gets stuck.

1-2 pounds a week, consistently is what you should expect. But STEAK? STEAK? you can eat STEAK? I know of NOBODY with a band that can eat steak! I'm guessing you could use a good fill. If your eating things like steak, and it can go through your band, then most every other food is going through very quickly and your not getting that full feeling for an extended period of time after eating, which may be causing you to eat more. Just a thought

IM LORI: Hmmm....my doc says most of his patients can eat anything except stringy red meat...and that aint steak! I even know people who eat fajitas. Lori, you might be too tight!

One thing we are told...if you try a food and can't eat it, wait a couple months and try again. Steak MAY be in your future; just make sure you pick a tender cut to start with!

I know everyone's doctor & dietician tells them something different so I thought I'd share what mine have said - do not have red meat and bread until 6 months after surgery. And if you have to eat bread, make sure it's 100 whole wheat.

I can eat steak too. It takes more effort to chew than say chicken but I do fine with it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
