Banded 9/11/2008

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Just joined.

Was banded on 9/11/2008. Dr Neil Floch in Norwalk CT.

Like many of the posts here, I cheated. Ate some talapia and mashed potatoes last night. then had egg beaters and a few bites of turkey sausage for Breakfast today.... chewed for about a minute each bite. it was not much but felt great. dedided to go back to the liquids as not to mess with the healing process. this site looks great. looking forward to learning/sharing a lot of information with you all. I started at 330 lbs and lost over 40 pre op. hope to get down to around 185.

Hope you all have a great day.

I can tell you guys what's wrong with it if you want to know.

When you eat ANY food (and it can be soft fish, or Beans, or whatever) your stomach CHURNS like a little washing machine to aid in digestion. We all do it; we don't feel it (just another miracle of our bodies). But all digestion isn't acid and enzymes...it's also that motion churning what's called "chyme" and preparing it to move on through.

The stomach does not "recognize" Clear Liquids and broths and many other drinks as food. Ergo, it doesn't churn when you drink a cup of chicken broth.

Now do you see the problem? During surgery your surgeon will pull your stomach up (or down) over the band and stitch it into place. Until that has healed, you risk tearing your sutures. You MAY feel pain now or you may not feel it until you are well down the road. If it doesn't heal properly, you can be PB'ing in 6 months and BAM get slippage, pain, face another surgery. You will think "Why did this happen to me?" It will be because you ate tilapia way too early, and your stomach did it's thing like it is meant to do, and in so doing, tore loose some of the sutures holding your band in place.

I know most docs don't make this clear...it's partly that they expect us to do what they tell us. They overestimate us sometimes!

But this is for your good...not to get you "used to starving" or any such foolishness. Just to let the band settle in to place and heal properly.

RestlessMonkey, Thank you for that explanation. I''ll keep it in mind when my turns come up to be banded. I never knew why is was THAT important to be on clears, then full-liquids; now I know. This board is terrific. I tell everyone I know about it. We really learn and share so much.

MyTurn...thanks for your kind words. I had to look it up because like many, my beloved surgeon just told me to do it but, at first, not why. I'm a "question authority" type but I don't want to hurt myself either. Between my husband (who's in the medical field), my research, and my doc, I now have a good answer WHY! WHY WHY do I have to starve! LOL and I'm happy to share! We have to have each other's backs!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
