Any Musicians?? Trumpet Players advice needed!!!

Recommended Posts

Hey all I am hopefully being banded on October 14th...I am a trumpet major in college and I am concerned about how this will affect my playing post op for awhile...You need lots of air and abdominal pressure to pull off playing...I have 7 days till I start classes again...is that long enough? I am really worried about hernias mostly. My professor said that he has gotten 2 hernias from things such as playing to soon after operations. Any suggestions?!?!? Is 7 days enough to start playing again?:cursing::embaressed_smile:

I think you need to really check with your surgeon. I know that they often don't want people with sleep apnea to use their C-pap machines because of the pressure of the oxygen....your doc can tell you how long to wait before it's safe. He can even give you a note if that will help you!

Hi! I play French Horn professionally and was banded on June 24th. I did not play until after my post op appt. with my surgeon - June 30th. He said it was ok to play and I started with warmups and easy exercises for the first week and then had to get to the serious playing the week after because I had a show to play. I was not affected by the band at all! Never felt any different playing or breathing. In fact, you would never have known I had the surgery except that my black pants were loose!

Go for it! You will be fine! Happy new band day! Music Mom :girl_hug:

Depends upon what you're going to play. If you're a screaming lead in a big band, then probably no. However, anything short of that is going to be trial and error. I'm 2 months out and playing doesn't bother me at all. I waited six weeks after the surgery because that's when my son started up again for school so I really didn't test it and didn't blow anything high and sustained.

Take it easy. It sounds like your prof understands so don't risk it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
