Recommended Posts

Is there anyone else out there that will have to give themselves blood thinner shots while recovering for a couple of days afterwards?

My doc gives the heparin shot before surgery then the coumadin pills for 10-30 days post op. The goal is to prevent blood clots from forming while healing takes place and we aren't so active.

ok I wasnt sure what others were doing because I had a friend who said 'well I didnt need those'. I wanted to say well maybe he isnt as cautious as my dr is but I let it go. I have to do the Lovenox shot for 7 days, once a day. They are better than the heparin which would have been 3 times a day for 10 days. Lucky me haha

I had to do the Lovenox for 7 days post-surgery. I had to self-inject it into my tummy. The needle was so thin that it was no big deal. Had to do that because I had a blood clot in 2003 and my doctor wanted to take the necessary precautions. It all worked out well....thank God!

Oh good even better to know someone did what I have to do. The needle did not look so bad when they showed it to me so it is all in my head.

I also had to do shots before and after my surgery (I had a blood clot to my lung 5 years ago while pregnant) The shot itself doesn't hurt, but be prepared for lots of bruising, and possibly a lump or two. (I am not telling you this to scare or worry you.. and you may not even get these things) but beleive me... both those things are so much better than a life threatening clot

Good luck on your surgery, and welcome to pre-bandland :cursing:

Thank you for letting me know that. I had heard that the bruising could happen so I will keep an eye out for it.

I am sure you will do great. I have had outpatient surgery before so I am ok with that portion except that I have not had the tube down my throat.

Hi Patty,

As someone mentioned earlier about bruising, I too got some bruising (black and blue) on my tummy where some of ther shots were but it totally clears up in a few weeks. Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Lisa

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
