Have Your Bowel Movements Changed Since Surgery

Recommended Posts

Not the most pleasant subject I know, but I didn't know who else to ask but you guys who've been through it lol! Has the frequency and quantity of anyones bowel movements changed since surgery. I mean I know we are eating far less so I expect that the amount would be smalller. I used to be very regular ever day, but now it's like every 3 days and just a small amount. I know with all the Protein and vitamans it can become easy to get constipated but I dont feel constipated or anything, so I was just wondering if this was normal??

Thanks!

Post op I didn't take the prescription pain meds; just used tylenol. I had mild diahrrea from the anesthesia that lasted about 5 days. Then I went every other day until mushies, and once I got mushies, every day. If you are going every 3 days and are not feeling pain, you're fine! It will pick up once you have something for your body to process!

I see you are in MI - my sis is in Kazoo looking for a good doc for banding - can you recommend anyone?

My bowels are just loose, I had diarrhea one day.

Good luck!

I was constipated for 5 days after surgery. I am now 14 days out and I go every other day. I used to be very regular, but I guess that I am not getting the Fiber I once ate. Also I went from 3000 calories a day pre-op to now 750-1200 cal a day.

My surgeon is in Lansing, about maybe an hour from Kalamazoo. My surgeon is Dr. Mindy Lane, she is very good and seems to really care about her patients. I highly recommend her. Also im 2 months post op and just experiencing this, maybe my body just adjusting???

I had surgery on Sept. 18th. Had a BM in the hospital but nothing since. I stopped taking the pain meds & I am not only taking children's strength tynenol, I was told that the codine makes you constipated. I also read that milk of magnesia helps. The pain is pretty bad all I want to do is Poop. Godd luck to all you new banders.

lea2015 They make tylenol for adults, too and it should be safe for you to take the dose recommended on the label, if you need it. If you can't find it just ask your pharmacist!

Since starting mushies I have been constipated and have only gone about every 3-4 days. I bought some Benefiber to add to Water a couple times a day and it has helped some. My bariatric binder says we can't take Metamucil - I think because it swells up. They told us to use Benefiber. They also said said since we are not eating much, we won't need to have a bowel movement every day.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
