Drinking before and after meals

Recommended Posts

Sure! Because the body doesn't recognize liquids as food (maybe one reason we all starve when we have to live on those nasty Protein shakes LOL). The point of the band is satiety. So when you drink too close to, or during, or right after a meal, that liquid can wash the food through your upper smaller stomach and through your lower larger chamber and you literally negate the positive effect of the band. The point is for the food to stay there long enough to trigger satiety...to fire the hormones and neural transmitters that tell your brain and body "That's a wrap I'm full I'm outta here" When you drink the food goes through and those signals don't get sent.

Docs vary about how long you have to go without; trying to balance that desired satiety with desired hydration. Mine says 15 minutes before, during (and we're to eat over 30 minutes) and then 15 minutes after (total of 1 hour) but they all put their own spin on it.

restlessmonkeys answer is right on. That's how my dietician explained it. Also, if you are having a problem with food being stuck, drinking something will not be the answer. Just so you know...

This is really good to know. I was wondering the same thing. That is why I like this site because there are always good tips from experienced banders:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
