Anesthesia tube question

Recommended Posts

I only have a few months to go and I will be getting a banding surgery date; I have a question. I do not lie on my back, ever, when I sleep because I choke and can't catch my breath... I sleep on my left side. But, when they do surgery I will be on my back. Did I read somewhere that I would be "tubed" with anesthesia to keep me breathing OK during surgery? If so, does this tubing take place after I am knocked out? This is worrying me to death! Thanks for helping this nervous ninny!

Yes you are put under and will have an oxygen mask until the anesthetist intubates you. S/he will also paralyze you so that you don't twitch or move during surgery (which, when you think about it, is a good thing). They bring you out of it and remove the tube before you wake up. You will have an oxygen mask before you are tubed and will have one in recovery, so you'll be able to breathe even on your back. Sounds like you have sleep apnea....you may need a sleep study and a cpap machine. I don't sleep on my back either and had absolutely no problems breathing pre op, during, or post op. and I slept on my left side the 1st night after surgery and on my tummy the second night. Did that answer your question?

You will not feel a thing! I just had my surgery 9/17 and my concern was like you... the tube--- only to find out I did not feel a thing. They do it once you are knoced out, and will have it out before you are awake. You may feel a little scratchy in your throat, but use the incentive speromiter they give you to breath, and you will be fine!

Good luck!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
