BMI or Waist/Hip Ratio - which is better?

Recommended Posts

I heard that BMI is a pretty rough measurement of obesity, due mainly to muscle weight v fat weight, so I Googled and discovered the Waist/Hip Ratio. It seems that For women: an ideal figure is 0.72 or less and For men: an ideal figure is 0.89 or less.

Go on, get a tape measure. I can wait.

I would say that BMI is the better known and more widely used measure, but has faults.

Any views welcome.

The waist hip ratio is better than the BMI as far as being a more accurate predictor of comorbidty risks due to obesity.. However, the best is the waist measurement. For men the waist should be no larger than 40 and for women no larger than 35. ( I WILL NOT tell you my waist measurement ). With the higher waist measurements, one is at higher risk for diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, coronary heart disease, premature death, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and cancer!

I can't wait until 10/14!!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
