Working toward banding

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am working on getting approved for banding. I am 90% sure I want to do this. I am 6'5 312 lbs but have a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, a difibrillator for cardio myopathy, asthma, and no gall bladder. In addition to flat feet, I have bad knees, shoulders, and even three unhealed cracked ribs left over from football days. The docs tell me I should qualify for insurance because of "co-morbidities".

I have been on every weight loss program there is and have worked out in the gym at least 200 days a year for the last 20 years. Even at 6'5 312 lbs I was doing 45 min of cardio a day. I was in the gym working out doing 150# seated military presses the day they told me I had cardio myopathy. I need to rid myself of fat and muscle and get back to the 215 lbs I was in college to get pressure off my heart.

As I go through the approval process and hopefully get a surgery date. I will keep you informed and will read with interest all your great posts.

Welcome and good luck to you! Just a caveat...don't get the surgery until you go that extra 10%. Take whatever time you need to get your questions answered and decide if it is indeed the right step for you!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
