Diet right after surgery

Recommended Posts

LapBand surgery is scheduled for next Thursday, hooray! I have been reading and reading everything I can find including the horror stories. Regarding diet after surgery I find anything from 2-4 weeks of Clear Liquids and then shakes/food pureed for 1-4 weeks, then mushies etc.

My plan: right after surgery I go back on protien shakes for 1 week then progress from there. Anyone else on this type of drinking/eating program?

I will follow my Drs/dietican's program I was just wondering.

Each Doctor is different- mine was two weeks of liquids followed by two weeks of mushies. But some people have doctors who dont have any kind of after surgery diet at all.

Best of luck to you and congratulations on the surgery

Hi- I will be starting Mushies next Wednesday. I have been on Protein Shakes for 2 weeks after surgery. My question is. What is everyone eating when the diet is Mushies?

My post-op diet was a week of full liguids (3 Protein shakes/day) plus broth, pureed Soups, Jello, etc and 48 to 64 oz of Water. Now, I'm on mushies for two weeks, and I start real foods on week four.

What are you actually eating on Mushies?

I'm not supposed to eat more than 1/2 cup per meal, three meals per day.

Lots of tuna (haha). Egg salad; egg omelets w/ FF cheese, onion, chili powder topped w/ salsa; baked chicken diced, salmon, bean Soup, refried Beans, weight control oatmeal (all of these no more than four oz).

I have less than four ounces of the Protein when I add a fruit or veg. (fruits: no skin - apple, peach, etc). (veg: 2 tbls baked and sweet potato, green beans, zucchini).

Plus a snack: SF Jello or popsicle. When I'm too busy, I've had a Protein Shake as a Meal Replacement.

Thanks-that's all sounding really good about now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
