first fill fears

Recommended Posts

Okay, so my dr. has just started doing lap bands @ Kings' Daughter's Hosp. here in Temple and I'm # 3 of his first to get his proctorship(?). Not that I don't trust him but some of the things he says and what I'm reading here don't mesh. I'm tempted to just listen to what's being said here, if its in the majority. I had my first fill today and he was not happy with me because one of the other lady's had lost over 40 lbs in 5 wks since surgery (08/05/08). I said that's not good, this time should have been just for healing and losing a few pounds, plus I told him I didn't want to lose more that 2lbs a wk and 1 lb would be better. Also I had emailed him a couple of wks ago and wondered if I was stretching my pouch because I could eat more and he never responded. When I asked him today he said it's possible, I wish he would've said that before, I could've done something, although I don't know what to do it you've stretched the pouch, does someone know? I had Soup for dinner tonight and a bottle of Water and feel very full, two bowls of soup. I'm suppose to do liquids for this week and back to regular eating next week. I went in really afraid of getting this fill but he did numb the area first but now I have a whole different set of fears! Please someone tell me if I'm totally messin myself up.confused.gif

I seriously doubt you stretched your pouch. And you're right that losing 1-2# per week is just about right. I am surprised that your doc actually compared you to another patient...that's not fair....especially when that other patient lost weight at a totally abnormal pace!

It sounds to me like you're doing just fine.

By the way, the remedy for a stretched pouch is to unfill the band and put you on liquids.

Thank you for your reply. That really makes me feel better. Today is my first day after getting my first fill. I've had liquids all day except for dinner which was olive garden for a friend's b-day, so I had a little salad and some Pasta fagoli Soup, didn't feel very full, but now I'm feeling like I overate...

Just a word of caution....after a fill proceed VERY carefully with known problem foods like salad (especially iceburg lettuce and vegetable skins) and Pasta. Also, be aware that your restriction can keep increasing for up to 2 weeks. That's what mine do, so don't be surprised. If you have an extreme episode of getting stuck, PB, spit up, etc., give your band a rest for 2 days by going back to liquids and mushies. Otherwise you get into a vicious cycle.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
