For Those Recently Banded How

Recommended Posts

The first week after surgery it took a while for me to be able to drink anything. There were even a couple days where I didn't drink much and started to feel a little dehydrated. Just keep sipping away. As long as your urine is clear or light in color you are probably fine. That's always the guide I use to see how hydrated I am.

For the first week after surgery I was told to sip 4 oz of liquids every hour. So an 8 oz Protein shake for me lasted 2 hours. The hours in between the Protein I would sip either broth or Water or have a sf ice pop or maybe even a little sf Jello. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought, I didn't feel that hungry. Shot for 60g of protein a day so I bought the shakes with the highest grams I could find. Good Luck !

Hi, i was banded on Aug. 27th. What did your doctors tell you? When I came out of the hospital, they told me at the top of the hour to drink 2 oz. of Protein Drink (I like ensure HP). Then every 15 minutes they said to drink 2 oz of Water, crystal lite, diet kool aid, etc. I was nervous because I thought I'd hurt myself. But I just sipped away and it all went down. Like others, when I first got banded, I didn't get all my liquid in and slept alot.

Best of luck to you. Ks

The first day or 2 I barely got a whole bottle down and Water was just not going down at all. Now I'm 10 days out and I can drink all I want and some mushy food as well. I even took pills without crushing them this morning,

The first day I could only drink about 4 oz of Water. Then the next day I babysat a 20 oz bottle water because I was scared to drink it...but then today I finished a Protein Shake in about 15-20 min. It really doesn't take long for me to finish my water or broth....I think it's mostly nerves that has me taking longer to drink something.

I was banded on Tuesday morning and by Tuesday evening, I could drink about a half cup of Water (that's about how much I could get from a glass of melted ice chips). Now, I can drink pretty much as well as I could before without any problem. I can finish a Protein drink in 5-10 minutes if I want to, but I usually try to savor those over a half hour or so since I want to feel full from them.

I just had surgery on Tuesday ( 9/16/08 ) and still trying to figure out how long it is taking me to do anything. The first day in the hospital I hardly touched anything they gave me. The cranberry juice in the ketchup size take-out container was the only thing I wanted. Thursday I ate a little pudding, broth, Water, and ice pops. I drank 8oz of Protein in skim milk. Today is just starting and going to go sip some water as I finish this up.

i was sipping 1 cup of Protein Shake over about a 30 min time frame, i felt like i was just sitting drinking all day, by the time i had my 3 shakes a day plus Water, tea, and staminade, i really didint have much time left for any thing else, also i was sippint glasses of mulitvitamins as well. just take your time, and basically have a glass of something in your hand most of the day. take care.

( ps if you are going to the toilet regularly to void, you know you are getting enough fluids.).

I have been peeing more in this last week than I have my entire life. I have to admit I hardly ever made it to the recommend Water intake before surgery and had a major addiction to Sprite. I haven't yet had my first bowel movement since surgery but I am thinking I may not being I haven't had any solid foods??

I am one week out, I had my surgery 9-12. I usually do 3 8oz Protein Shakes a day and sip them over 15-20 minutes with no trouble. I am tired of plain Water and use flavored mix-ins a lot. the K2O protien water is really good! I bought the mixed berry and will be going to get more today, they add another 5 grams Protein to your totally for the day while helping you get your fluids.

This morning I decided to try 4 oz and will try to drink that within the hour.

I am not dehydrated(went to primary dr yesterday) but I have the most severe cotton mouth. I am about to die.

I suck on ice chips all the time.

Anyways, I had a few good big sips of really cold Water this morning and it's ok. But immediately afterwards, I feel like it's tightening up a little between my breast.

I'm just so thirsty.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
