nope no gum it causes you to swallow air and that means gas...and even if you NEVER EVER swallow it, all it takes is once and you can have big trouble. Just not worth the risk...use sugar free breath mints.

It was never mentioned as a no-no by my surgeon. I keep some in my purse for those "not-so-fresh" moments, but seldom chew it. I've never had any trouble with gas from chewing gum, but I only chew it for 10-15 minutes at the most. Once the flavor is gone, it's outta there. But I can understand the very real possibility of a big problem if it is swallowed. Perhaps I'll switch to mints once I finish this pack.

I was told I should consider. They never said i didn't have to at all but they said it would be safer. I didn't chew gum for the first 6 months or drink diet coke. I do now but i drink really slow and my mouth gets annoyed of a piece of gum after a while. Strange because i used to be a BIG gum chewer. the soda just makes you gascious. If you don't get rid of the gases, thats when you stretch your pouch. If your surgeon says no, than don't do it.

Always follow what your surgeon tells you because every person's body is different.

My Doctor says No but never mentioned air, gas or pouch. He said it is very dangerous if you should accidently swallow it. It can get stuck and be very difficult to unstick causing a lot of pain.

Wow! I am glad I popped in and read this. I just had a piece of gum yesterday and never even thought should I or shouldn't I ! I wondered why I was so "burpy" last night. I have also been using straws and will stop that now too. Good grief! To go through surgery, etc. and then blow it with straws or gum. Thanks!!!!!!

I have been using straws but I have been wondering if sf gum or mints would be OK. I get a terrible taste in my mouth and brush my teeth and tounge frequently. Guess I will stop straws. There are so many unwritten rules to this. I had my band on 9/12.

rshrn77...that terrible taste is probably fat metabolizing. As a poster said on another thread "embrace your bad breath!" LOL Ok I know you won't, but try some type of sugar free breath mint. Listerine used to make film tabs for bad breath too...

WOW! This was very helpful information. I have my 1/2 day class on Tuesday (required by my doctor and insurance). I wonder if they will cover these kind of issues. If not, I plan to bring them up! Thanks everyone for the tips.

Hmmm... now I know. Guess I'll have to find another way other than gum to battle my anxiety! Take up smoking again??? ROFL, just kidding!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
