Hey from Kentucky

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a country gal from the beautiful Appalachian mountains of Kentucky. I'm 49, married to my high school sweetheart now for over 30 years and the very proud mother of 2 gorgeous girls.

Last year I became acquainted with lap band when my oldest daughter had the procedure. I was there from the first seminar to the most recent fill. I'm very proud of her bravery and she's lost about 53 pounds since 8/2/07.

I've come looking for help. I'm 'obese' (hate that word). Cried my eyes out the first time I saw that written on a receipt from my doctor. Had an obgyn tell me once that women should be charged by the pound, the more pounds-the more problems...sadly he is right (at least in my case).

I have high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism and zero enegry. I feel like a prisoner in this body. I've seriously just recently come to realize how big I am. It's like I've gone through life with blinders on until recently. I'm 5'5 and weigh 265 pounds. My peak weight was 293 but I've managed to lose 28 pounds in about 2 years but I seem stuck now.

I've come to this website in the hope of getting some valuable information from someone who might now where I can go for help. I have no insurance and cannot possibly take on the debt of $19K. Does anyone know of any program, etc that helps people in my position? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm happy to have found this website and will gladly share the journey I'm on with my daughter. She's so beautiful and personable, I'm so glad she has had her lap band.

Welcome and good luck..I am just south of you in Nashville.

Some insurances pay for lap band. You can get a loan through various programs. I think carecredit.com is one place. There are docs throughout the country and in Mexico that do it cheaper.

Since you have been there with your daughter, you know what to expect. You will find all kinds of info here and everyone will help you with your questions or issues.

Hi Judebo,

I'm from KY too! Right outside of Louisville and origionally from Bowling Green. I have had the same insurance problems and finally decided to look into getting the proceedure done in MX. It costs less than 1/2, and there are a few with very good reputations there! The cost was important to me but so was quality. If you decide to go that route you need to make sure a local dr will take you on as a pt BEFORE going! I called the 3 teams in Louisville today and only one agreed to take me...thank goodness that at least one was willing! I got a loan for surgery thru my bank-hate that-but it is an investment in my life and if there is something that can add a few yrs to my life then it is worth it to me! My surgery date is Oct. 30th! Whoo hoo!!! I am excited but nervous! Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
