WHY are people voting for McCain?

KillingAbortion centers and/or doctors, Gadget.

OK, then, emphatically NO. And pro-lifers are NOT in favor of bombing abortion centers or killing abortionists.

Wow - thinking being born into an abusive situation is OK. Would you have been OK with Jeffrey Dahmer's mother having one? Gah.

No, I would not. To pre-emptively abort a child because he might become a serial killer is a ridiculous proposition.

Ahh, remember when the Republicans used to want the government OUT of folks' bidness?

I do want the government out of folks' business. The reason I'm pro-life is because the unborn are human beings and don't have a voice (or a choice!); when someone attempts to kill another person, the government has a right to intervene.

I would actually have to put myself in the pro-choice camp. As a Christian, I think abortion is a sin.....but my deal is that I don't think the federal government should legislate the issue. I think it should become a states' rights issue. I think I would not support abortion in any way, but I don't want the fed sticking their fingers into my (or any American's) life any more than they already do.

As a Christian, I think abortion is a sin, too -- but that has nothing to do with my opposition to it. I was pro-life before I was a Christian. "Sinfulness" didn't enter my objection to abortion before I was a Christian; it was, quite simply (and remains, quite simply), an objection to murder.

Did the government have a right to intervene when the states defined black people as 3/5 of a person, and therefore able to be enslaved, sold, or killed at whim? Of course they did! Because when we define people as less than human and then kill or enslave them, it is a perfectly legitimate issue to have the government legislate.

We don't say "my neighbor is going to kill his wife, but it's his choice so I won't get involved and it shouldn't be illegal." The same should apply to a mother wanting to kill her baby, born or unborn.

Well I am not currently on the pill (I know, tmi). If I got raped and became pregnant, there is zero way I'm carrying that child to term. Women will continue to have abortions no matter what. I would prefer that they be performed safely. Whatever - I'm finished with this argument.

It is something that is very confusing to me: Why are the republicans so very much against personal choice (gay marriage, abortion, other sins, etc.) but against big government?

Yet, Dems want a socialist society, yet not tell anyone what to do with their choices? I don't get it....

I had a daughter when I was *mostly* young. 21, but still really fricking stupid. I would not have considered an abortion...I quit all drinking/drugs/smoking when I found out I was pregnant. I broke up w/bf 3 days before I found out I was pregnant and had moved out. I was homeless/staying on friend's sofas and really didn't want to move back in w/mom.

So, I went to catholic charities...other churches....pro-life centers...everywhere to try and get help. No one helped me. No one. So, I moved back in with mom, cleaned up my life - got my GED, got a great job and moved on with my life. Whenever I see signs for pro-life propaganda I get grumpy.

I was on WIC and food stamps for one year, then I took myself off because I was doing well enough by then.

As a teenager I was very anti-abortion. I even stood in a protest line and had a "Abortion stops a beating heart" poster on my bedroom wall.

But, somewhere along the way I changed my mind. I knew I had it in me to change my life around because of my precious daughter, but I had to break connections with people who were still partying on - while their five-year old and their two-year old and the baby in the crib watched their pregnant-again mom smoking dope. Could I look at them and say they have a better life? Nope. Neither could I make the decision to abort them, but I do believe that more needs to be done to prevent unwanted pregnancies. For rape and incest and life endangered pregnancies it should not be anyone's choice other than the parents/mother.

There is nothing worse than being an unwanted child. I know - I was one. My mother is very pro-life and wouldn't have had one even if they were available. But, she made a point to tell me how I was a mistake and that she only wanted one kid - my older brother. Things are better now, but I was a problem child and a burden to her. I wouldn't wish those feelings on any child.

Okay...sorry for the length. I'm tired, and grumpy over remembering my experiences. It was hard times and it's definitely a touchy subject.

You have a right to be grumpy, Gloucester. You should have had help and you shouldn't have been turned away. Progress has been made and pro-lifers are much more aware of the needs of mothers before and after the life decision. I'd venture a guess you wouldn't get the same answers today that you did years ago. And again, you didn't deserve what you went through -- asking, in good faith, for help, and getting turned away. The question of whether help is or is not there, however, doesn't justify the killing of innocent human beings. We don't solve social problems by killing people.

I do have to disagree on a few things, though.

Better life than what? Than death? Surely, yes, being alive is better than being dead. With death there is no hope.

That just plain sucks. It's not a fair thing to convey to your kids in any way, shape, or form. But there is something worse than being an unwanted child: suffering a violent death.

So you're anti-death penalty?

Yes, I am. A decade ago, however, I wasn't. The pro-life movement, which I have been involved in for close to 30 years, converted me.

I believe this will shock my buddy, Plain, but I am for the death penalty in that some people just don't deserve to be walking this earth (Dahmer). However, we have seen that it flat doesn't deter crime, unfortunately. Plain knows what my plan for crime is!

Aprily-appley - I see you out there lurking. You know you wanna say something!!! (I can't wait to hear Tina Fey saying "new-cue-ler") OMG I just heard someone on CNN say that Palin's a viable Republican candidate for 2012. GAH!!!

Why thank you! Ha, my solution for crime is to take all of the lifers (criminals) and put em all in a fence and arm them. Last one alive, give us a call!!! Ima a cheap beotch and I'm sick of paying substantially more to house a criminal than we do on educating a child!!!

OK, big girl's gotta hit the hay. It's almost midnight on the East coast!

PS - off topic - what's going on in Mountain Brook? I saw some slideshow about the top 10(?) suburbs that are hurting and it was in there. I was very surprised. (Go Obama/Biden!)

(My husband thinks we should test weapons and drugs on them)

I don't think it's being cheap to be upset at what we pay to house a criminal.

I think people should have the FREEDOM to do what ever the heck they want with their bodies! I am pro-life, but I can careless if Samantha and John decides to have an abortion. Is YOUR choice. YOUR abortion wont affect me in any way! The abortion issue is highly related to religion, what happened to separation of church and state?

Yup. I agree. The problem is the baby is not the mother's body; he or she is a different person.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
