Trying to figure out the steps...

Recommended Posts

Okay I am new to the whole process of getting approved, and am not sure I understand the steps. I went to my PCM and requested the lapband. He asked me about my attempts to lose weight and if I had anything medically wrong other than my weight. I told him I was borderline for pcos, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He asked if I'd seen the dietician recently. I told him I'd seen her several times in the past couple of years but she wasn't very helpful beyond giving me printouts. He typed something in the computer and looked at some stuff and then said he thought it was a 'brilliant' idea and would submit the paperwork. It had to go somewhere else beyond him in our local hospital for approval. I called and was told that our local mtf approved it and was sending it on to tricare. I've called tricare and am still waiting @@ (it's not been long i'm just impatient lol) BUT once they approve me are they approving my consult or the surgery? Do I have to wait for an additional tricare approval? I'm confused....help....lol

What i was told by my PCM and my surgeon was that once tricare gives the approval to see them that tricare has approved the surgery. I was scared that it was only a approval to see the surgeon and i'd have to get another approval to get the surgery, but nope! Once you get that approval your all the way approved!! :)

Mine was the other way around....I got approved only for the consult, after the consult the surgeon's office sent in the info to Tricare to get approval for the surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
