Most of you may think I'm freakin nuts...!!!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery last Tuesday on the 9th, came home, rested, followed eating chart up to yesterday... Okay, I'm feeling GREAT! Soo much better than I thought I would've by reading other people's experiences with this. Yesterday I was feeling soo good, no pains meds needed for 3 days now, no pain at all except for soreness on my port incision....... I ATE GUMBO(with rice and sausage)AND A FRIED SHRIMP(both of my weaknesses!!). I chewed very well and everything was perfectly fine! No pain at all... the only outcome was that I felt fuller after maybe only 1/2 a bowl of food.BEFORE YOU ALL START YELLING AT ME..... lol I KNOW it was wrong and I shouldn't have done it and I should've continued to follow the food chart I was given, but I just couldn't help it. I'm freaking myself out at how great I'm feeling so soon afterwards! I know I'm supposed to change the way I eat or this will never work, but I just couldn't help but try it to see if I could even do it because I was so hungry! I'm not going to continue eating this way, I just did it out of hunger and curiosity after not eating (only drinking and pudding) for 4 days. I have an appointment for next week for my check up and first fill which I can't wait for b/c I need restriction!! I've already lost 10lbs since pre-op. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?? Is it normal to be able to eat those sort of things only a few days after surgery??

Hey! Guess your not alone, I did the same thing a couple of weeks agao.. But then I got freaked out because People were telling me that I could damage my band That it could slip if I wasn't careful.. So know I am being good again.. I had surgery on sept 4th.. I have lost 11 pounds so far, But I am hungry all the time too! Hopefully when I see the Doctor on the 22nd of this month, I will get a fill, Or at least get told I can start eating Protein and veggies...

I feel wonderful too. But the post op diet is NOT to "change the way you eat"...it is to allow your band to heal. It is lightly stitched into place..your stomach IS PULLED UP over it and it is sewn down. When you eat food (like you did) your stomach CHURNS to aid in digestion. You don't feel it, but it churns like a little washer. You may have torn some sutures. You need to tell your doc so he can see if you need an xray or something to make sure everything is still ok. You wouldn't necessarily feel pain...but down the road you'll get erosion or slippage.

Not yelling. I'm not your mama. But apparently you weren't told why it is so important to follow your doc's post op guidelines. You will need to make sure you didn't hurt yourself.

Wow, I thought I was bad by drinking half a Protein Shake 2 days early! LOL!

You're already getting a fill? I have to wait 6 weeks to get mine.

One thing I've learned is that you can get away with a whole lot more before you get your fill than I thought...

Apparently that's why the guidelines, to help you get used to eating this way, because once you get a fill, no mistakes allowed. It's good that you chewed very well. I swallowed 2 Excedrin yesterday out of habit and freaked when I realized what I did.. fortunately I didn't have a problem, but the same thing with drinking Water after my meal and forgetting to chew, chew, chew the first bite.

Just make sure you try to go back to the guidelines to build a new habit of eating!

Good luck!

Is it normal to be able to? Probably its not unusual but most people dont do it so you cant really say if its normal or not.

Put it behind you and move on. You know you shouldnt have. Its important that you try not to do it again. But I wouldnt take the ability to eat as a sign that you're not goign to lose well or the band isnt going to work or any of the million things that people tend to freak over.

I'd imagine that's its quite normal to be able to eat without terrible discomfort quite soon after surgery when you're unfilled. Some people heal very quickly.

I have seen many people say "I ate solids and felt fine afterwards" Please understand, that is not the point. We are not told to do liquids and mushies to avoid getting sick, or to lose weight we are told so to avoid pulling the stiches. You can pull the stiches and not even feel it right away. If you tear a stitch, your band could slip now or later on down the road and only then would you know that you have caused the damage.

Like Jachut said, put it behind you and move on. You can't go back and undo this slip-up but be sure to understand that just because you felt fine afterwards does not mean that you did not do any damage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
