So, I went to my pre-op group meeting with the nurse today. It was a two hour meeting and was very informative. Although I have been on the board for months, I had a ton of questions. I probably asked about 15 questions when everyone else asked maybe 1-2. Do people just not care and will deal with things when they get there? I am pretty anal and like to be planned for everything. I'm thinking that I might have had a longer time to think about things since I started the process a while ago and just decided I was ready for it last month. I am truly ready for this to be over and get on with my new life! She did make me a little nervous when she talked about preferring an overnight stay, but since I'm self pay I go home that night. i don't mind paying more if it means better care! Since our doc doesn't require a pre-op diet she said to make sure that we don't gain weight and try to lose it. I'm sure you all know that this is hard. I feel like I have to get in every possible food in case I can't every eat it again. Ok, I'm done rambling!

I think its good that you had questions and got them answered but don't assume that people who don't ask, don't care! Before I got to your point I'd read 2 books, read my surgeon's entire web site, reade the lap band web site from cover to cover, and gone over what was covered in my nursing journals. I probably could've answered some of your questions for the nurse! LOL I'm sure some people are just trusting or shy but not all. And since I was SO informed, I got quite antsy sitting while people asked questions that I felt had already been answered! :tt1: We're all just trying to do the right thing, I think! :)

Hi Travelin,

Congrats on starting the process to get your band. Just wanted you to know I was banded in April and I eat anything I want (almost) just very little of it. The other day we went to our favorite restaurant and the owners wife is a pastry chef. Well, they had just taken a beautiful 3 layer chocolate cake our for display. I ordered a piece and took it home. I had 2 bites with lunch and 2 bites with dinner and 2 bites before bed. My husband had the rest and it was wonderful to be satisfied and still not feel deprived. I certainly don't do that every day and really would not want to, but that day it was wonderful. It is not nearly as bad as you might imagine, and when you get on the scale, it is great. Best wishes on your journey.

Sally

I think part of me doesn't want to be able to eat those foods so I don't go overboard! Although it sounds like you pay the price if you do. Good to know that you can still eat some of the thinigs you like in moderation. At this point I think that I have read so many books and blogs that I know what can happen so it is all a matter of getting it over with and seeing what will and won't be happening to me!

No pre-op diet? If your liver is too big you may end up with an open band vs. lap band. Good luck!

I only asked a few questions, because I already knew everything else. I, like Restless, had done extensive research and pretty much knew what I was getting into. Plus my doc provided me with a 3 ring binder that's basically a book of exactly how there program works, everything you're required, etc. Maybe some people wanted to ask there questions to the doc in private at the consult?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
