Problem getting post op fluids in

Recommended Posts

I just had my band on 9/12. I was having a hard time getting my fluids in. I had maybe 32 oz yesterday. i was trying to only drink fluids with Protein (Isopure, special k protein water) I am also allowed cream Soup and plain yogurt, but these aren't of interest to me either. Today I received a call from the nurse who said not to worry so much with the protein and try to get my fluids in. I started with plain cold bottled Water and it went down soooo much easier. Follow your dr's instructions by all means, but this has probably saved me from dehydration.

I was banded on 9/9 and can get it down; but this gas is horrible. I was wondering when will the awful burping go away. It feels like a knife in my shoulder blades even after sips of Water. Is it just the swelling that should go away.

All I can manage is about 1/2 cup of Soup and 1 pop cycle a day. I get about 20oz of Water. Is this normal?

Hello,

This best thing you can do is sip Water all day long if you can. I remember I could barely drink at first and had pain, dont gulp or take big mouthfuls of Water. The burping is the air you are taking in from drinking, eventually it will go away. I didnt think it would and about the gas pain was murder. Just walk alot and if needed take gas-x. But if you had a hernia the pain will last for a while. I only drank about 20 to 32 oz of water a day. and still only take in that amount. I wish you luck on your journey.

Hi There-

I had my band done on 9/8, I have a really hard time getting all the fluids in. I try very hard to so I don't dehydrate. It will get easier with time, you have to remember you are still healing. My gas pains subsided about a day ago. Good luck with your journey!!!

I was stressed about not getting the full 64 oz the first couple weeks. I was told to just sip slowly all day long and I would be fine.

Every day got easier to get my fluids in and by about week 3 I was getting 64oz in with no problem!

Unfortuanetley I still burp like crazy.

OMG I had that horrible pain just like you everytime I ate or drank. I haven't had it now for a couple of days. I think I may be over it. I didn't have the burping thing going on, I was praying for a burp. I just took my steri strips off my incisions and they look good. Take care and you'll be just fine.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
