Dr. couldn't access port for 2nd fill

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I have a couple of questions for you. I went in today for my 2nd fill. All was fine until the Dr. couldn't access my port. Let me start by saying that on my first fill, he hit it perfect on the first try. This time he dug around for what seemed like hours (may 20 minutes?!!!) and never could find the access for it. I could feel him bumping it and now I am terribly sore. My abdomen is not that big and I can actually palpate my port. He swears it isn't flipped. I go back in a couple of days to have it done in the radiology department in the hospital.

My questions to everyone:

1.) Has anyone else had this happen to them?

2.) If yes, was your port flipped?

3.) Also, does anyone have to pay out of pocket for their fills under fluoro? My insurance doesn't cover fills, so I'm wondering how dang much this is going to cost me!!!:tt1:

I have had several fills and the first time was easy. the doc got it right away. the 2nd time his nurse did it and she got it right away. the others she has a hard time. It hasn't flipped; she assures me its still there and was sutured in but its at a slight angle (not 'sunny side up' as we would imagine it to be.) Its taken her a while to get in but she persists and I end up with a bruise and a poke! Got the next one (hopefully last for a while) this Thursday so I hope she remembers she needs to go at it fron a slightly different angle. My fills (Realize band) are covered because I was self pay. I havent had any under fluor yet but I guess they do them that way if theres a problem. My doc charges $75 per fill if its not Realize band.

sorry to hear that girl. I know it's painful - thank God I'm always filled under fluro. I have such a fear of needles, I don't think I could've have survived the 20 minutes you had to endure today.

I wish I could be more helpful - I dont know how much fills are. I am self pay and I'm "under warranty" for the first year. I'll have to start paying myself in about 2 months. YIKES!!

Best of luck - I hope your next fill is much better!

Hey there, I have had two fills so far, and mine takes a few minutes because it is sideways. Don't understand why but it is. This last time they had to dig around for a while to find it so I feel your pain. Mine hurt like you know what afterwards also.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am getting more sore as the evening goes along! I feel like someone punched me in the abdomen. It will be interesting to see what fluoro tells!

I've had 3 fills...4 counting the one when they couldn't find the port.

All of them have been difficult and painful. I won't let them touch me without numbing it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
