Has anybody ever been told that the valve that they put in was wrong and that you were supposed to be able to put Fluid both in and out....my doctor just told me that he thinks mine is now a in only valve and that would mean a replacement valve....

Is this common.

I've never heard of this. It sounds like a pretty big screw-up. Do you know who is responsible for this error?

I agree. They should check the band's function BEFORE they place it. That's common in medicine. I think your doc fumbled this one.

I went in for my 2nd refill ....and the nurse who put the Fluid in said that she tried 2 times to pull fluid back out and she could not get any.

so they said to wait for my next visit which is now in 16 more days and they would check it again...then i heard them talking in the next room about possible removal of the valve and replacement.....i have enough scars....now another surgery...great

That just sounds so crazy. You have to have the adjustability . . . I can't see them making a one-way valve because it doesnt make any sense. Plus, if you are puncturing the port with a needle and injecting Fluid, I don't see why it wouldn't come back out again.

I would have to wonder if you have a leak or punctured tubing more that the wrong kind of valve. Have you felt any changes in restriction levels since you started getting fills?

I agree, that makes no sense at all. Why would they put it in if the Fluid only goes one way? If that's the case and they overfilled you, how would they adjust it? I also can't believe they were not honest with you at your last appointment. You shouldn't have to overhear a possible complication. Why the 16 day wait? Will that make the fluid come out if you wait 16 more days? I would be very curious to see what they tell you next time. I hope you will keep us posted. Good luck!

I had to have my port replaced in April. The problem was that he could put Fluid in, but could not get anything out. It was not a problem with the port but rather a kink in the tubing that goes from the port to the band. My doctor used the same surgical sight, and it was done under conscious sedation, so I did not have to be put out. Recovery was very fast and I was even shopping with my mom less than an hour later, although I probably should have just gone home because when the anesthesia wore off I was sore. It was nothing compared to the first surgery, but still had pain at the port sight due to it having to be re-stitched to the abdomen wall, and I didn't have to go through the month of liquids/mushies again.

Hope this helps.

Ari

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
