Hello, im glad to have seen this site. I been reading on these forms for a week or so and i guess its time to let my presence known. Im not banded yet but am looking into starting the process as soon as i can. To tell a little about my self, im 32 years old come thurs. June 23 and am 450lbs+. Im about 260lbs over weight and need a lot of help. I have a loving wife and two great kids(a 1 1/2 year old boy & a 5 month old girl). I was a meatcutter purty much all my life untill Nov. 5th 2003 when i could nolonger work. I have 4 rupturd disk and a few other things wrong with my back. After finding this out, i went from 375lbs to 450 in know time. With my size, there is nothing too much that can be done to help. All the Dr.s i see say i have to loose a lot of weight before they can do anything, at the same time saying i need bed rest. Not to lift ANYTHING and take it easy. Man oh man, what a year its been. Well, My wifes Dr mention the weight lost surgery and well, after looking into it, i think im now ready to go for it. My wife will be doing the lap-band also for she is 100lbs over weight. But, im on bluecare-medicaid and knowone around here seems to eccept it. But im not quiting. I will be going back to the Dr on the 30th of this month and will be talking to him about it. I hope he can get me in the right direction. Well, i hope to be talking with yall more in the future and be getting my band one day :-)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
