Surgery out of town... what should I bring with me?

Recommended Posts

Hi all...

I know I have had a TON of questions lately... Thanks to all who have answered

I am traveling (by car) with my mom from Louisiana to Colorado for my surgery. (Lots of stops and overnights on the way back so I dont have to ride for too long).

Since I will be staying away from home for several days post-banding... could some of you give suggestions on things, foods, etc. That I may want to bring with me? Or random things that I may not have considered yet?

Thanks

No food, I'm thinking. most docs require several days to 2 weeks of fluids post op. (some even more..but they are in the minority)

A pillow to brace your surgical sites, loose comfy clothes, a large bra (I had one one size up...band width...that I wore surgery day) a cooler for Water, little sugar free Jello packs (I guess that's food) liquid tylenol for pain that doesn't require heavy duty stuff comfortable shoes (you'll need to stop and walk very frequently...and when in the car, make sure you move your legs often...ie pointing your toes, turning your feet in circles, etc...anything to keep blood flowing and prevent clots) and the normal hygiene items like brush comb toothbrush and paste etc...lip balm (not just gloss) because your lips will be VERY dry the 1st few days...glasses if you wear contacts....

Allyson~

Hi! I have not had surgery yet. My surgery is in 2 wks. (yikes!) with Dr. K. so I will have to get back to you with some suggestions. Have you visited the Dr. K thread? All the girls over there are super nice and I'm sure they would be more than willing to help if you posted this question over there.

Also if you ever get carsick...make sure your doc knows and can prescribe some anti-nausea meds.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
