September 16th surgeries

I am beginning to think I am insulin resistant. I want to know more about Metformin. Is it working for you? I am at such a loss as to what to do. My weight is stuck. I did not go through surgery to lose this little amount of weight. Somebody help me! I go to see my surgeon on September 14 and want to have something to tell her. I am hypothyroid and been taking Synthroid since 1980. This is really frustrating. With exercise and only eating 3 small meals a day, I should be losing and I am not. I can't get below 206. My weight stays between 206 and 210. My goal is to get to around 155 and I can't seem to get under 200. No sliming incidents lately. I am eating a scrambled egg for Breakfast with a strip of bacon. lunch is a small salad with grilled chicken and low calorie dressing. dinner is grilled fish or chicken and vegetables. I am drinking between 60 to 80 ounces of Water a day. What am I doing wrong? I also have thinning hair in my temples, which may be because of my thyroid issues but also may be because of not eating enough Protein. I really want to make it to my goal by next Summer.

Hi. I am sorry that you are having troubles. Could it be that you aren't taking in enough calories? I know that when I start to stall, when I look at what I am eating for my activity level, I find that I am not eating enough. You may want to try to shake things up some for a few days. Hopefully that will help you get over that hump. Also, be proud of what you have done. Just think, the scale would have probably moved in the other direction had you not gotten your band.

The metformin is really helping with the urge to snack, so it's not such a struggle. It had been! I have lost 4 pounds since starting it. But I'm still hungry all the time. Probably an emotional hungry, as two of my 3 sons have started school, the other in 2 weeks. It has also brought my sugars back into the proper zones. They'd been inching up. I wasn't significantly high.

A long time ago they tested my sugar by doing a glucose challenge test. I had to fast for more than 8 hours. Then they took a blood test. They then gave me a huge amount of sugar drink. (Like when you're pregnant). Then every hour on the hour they took blood to test how my body was metabolizing sugar. My body holds on to it. So I'm insulin resistant type two diabetic. When I was pregnant with the twins (which was a year after my diabetes diagnosis), they had an incredibly difficult job keeping my sugars under control. Towards the end I was on 50 units of combination long and short acting insulins. Without the insulin, my sugars were only 170's ranges. Why? Because my body fought it because of the insulin resistance. It sure made life interesting, because I'd have to check in every 3 or 4 days MAXIMUM. I had to go every two weeks for blood pressure checks, and weight checks, because it increased my risk of Toxemia. Thank God that never happened.

So to be back in this boat isn't a huge surprise for me.

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
