Got my lap band yesterday !!

Recommended Posts

Well, yesterday was the big day. I arrived at the hospital about 7Am and at 745 was called back to the preop area where I was prepared for surgery. I guess I stayed in there about 45 mins and was then taken to the anesthesia waiting area. I spoke with several nurses and anesthisiologists. About 30 mins. later I was in the operating room. The next thing I knew, I was in recovery. I have always had a nausea problem after surgery, even though the doctors give me anti-nausea meds in the iv line during surgery. In fact, the doctor told me before surgery, that she planned to give me three doses during the surgery, one at the beginning, one midway, and one at the end. She thought this would help me a lot. Well guess, what? Everytime I sat up on the side of the bed for about 2 minutes I started getting that queasy feeling. I must say the staff really worked with me, trying to make me feel better. I was gived more anti-nausea, but it didn't help much. I never was nauseated enough to vomit, thankfully. It turns out they had me stay all night, they changed my iv solution to one that had some sugar in it to help rid me of the nausea. I was up at 4 o'clock this morning sitting in a chair without nausea!!! At about 6 o'clock I was walking the hall with a nurse assitant. I was finally discharged about 830 this morning. I am still swollen; but the doctors and nurses said that this is type of gas that cannot be expelled the traditional way, that it is absorbed into the body. I don't have pain, but I am very sore - - I told the nurse I felt like I have been run over by a freight train.

I had some optisource for Breakfast at the hospital and its now 721PM and I am about the drink some more. I have not had any desire to eat since I got out of surgery. I have been sipping Water and unsweetend tea all day. I had perscriptions for Lortab elixar for pain, and phenagran suppositories for nausea. Good luck to others about to undergo this procedure.:wink_smile:

Sounds like you had a rough time; makes me even happier that mine was so smooth! BUT you're home and recovering now! Happy band day! I hope you love yours as much as I (already!) love mine!

Depends on your doc. My doc requires only Water, broth, and Jello for 1 week. Week 2, we get to add in Protein Shakes. So by his rules, no, not yet. But all surgeons are different. However, when you eat, your stomach churns, so there's a good reason to NOT eat for the first few weeks, to let your band heal.

Everyone gets hungry on the postop diet. We just suck it up!

BUT what I said was that it depends on your Doctor. What did s/he tell you to do? THAT is what you should do....not what I tell you. I'm not a doctor! MY doc told me what I told you. That's MY doc. What does YOURS say?

Thanks for the play by play!! Gives me an idea of what to expect. I too suffer from nausea after anesthesia, so hopefully they'll mix me up a little cocktail for that!!

Best wishes to you as you continue to recover!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
