Getting band done on 09/24

Recommended Posts

Hi there, i am new to this forum.

I did everything required by the insurance (Aetna) - it took some time as my first visit to the info session was in May and then I had to collect a small pile of papers. But it is all done, Aetna approved, and it is scheduled...

Recently I started to read forums here and at OCC, and... oh well... I started to feel nervous and getting cold feet about this whole thing. A sizable minority complained it did not help them. Many said plug was sore for a long time. Any words of wizdom from the forum?

:)

By plug do you mean the port? If so mine isn't sore and hasn't been and I had my band placed 8/29. The band works if you work it. If you eat around it, don't deal with your head or emotional hunger, it won't help. Period. If you are ready to change how you eat, it will help you get slimmer and more healthy, but its just a tool, not magic! I think a lot of people don't really get properly educated by their surgeons preop and think it will be effortless, and it's not. But if you are committed to using it as a tool to help you, it will do the job.

Thanks! Yes, I had 'port' in mind. I already feel somewhat better that i started to see that only a very, very few people had band not working.

I am going to make all the efforts to make it work -- having done Atkins before (and very successfully until I was not doing it...) I am not afraid of life on high Proteins / low carbs.

By the way - am I gonna be in Ketosis when on the post-surgery diet? Did it happen to anyone here?

-A.

I was in Ketosis on the preop diet but not post op...liquids initially didn't have enough Protein to make me that way. I probably will be again once I can eat what they call "solids" or "hard" foods

I think you'll be very successful! :)

and the beauty is, once we have lost our excess, we can eat more "normally" but it will be so much less.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
