Consult today....surgery date Nov. 21st!

Recommended Posts

I had my consult today with the surgeon. Since my insurance doesn't require anything pre-certification...I can have my surgery quick! I was first given a date of 10/31, but because of my job, I can't take off the end thru beginning of the month, so I had to go with the November date.

I'm excited and scared at the same time! After reading everything that most of you have/had to go through pre-op, I left the surgeon's office feeling a bit confused about why I didn't need a psych evaluation or needing to see a nutritionist for 6 months, but as it was explained to me....my insurance doesn't require it. I was just expecting that I'd have to do all of the things that I've read about on here. Oh well. Now the wait! :)

That does sound a little werid... I would ask your doctor why no pre-op stuff? B/c it is important to make sure you are okay for surgery... maybe go with a different doctor? That would make me do a double take! Good luck to you!

The only thing that I am required to do is have blood work done, and EKG and chest xrays. But other than that...I don't have to do anything else. Not even a pre-op diet. Just no food or liquids after mid-night I think.

You don't even have to see a nutritionist? I start mine Sept. 22. I have so many questions on how to work this band. I do learn a lot on here but I definitely have specific questions. I just want to get maximum results from this tool. Do you know everything food wise your suppose to do? Just curious.

I just have to see the dietician at the surgeon's office before surgery and she's free of charge after surgery, so I know that I'll be seeing her post-op. But for pre-op, it is not required for me to see a nutritionist for approval purposes with the insurance company. I have Oxford and as long as your BMI meets their requirements, they don't require you to go through different processes of approval, you're already approved for the surgery, which is pretty much why I was a little confused. I was expecting to have to go through all of the requirements that other insurance companies have.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
