Hey, Is it possible to drive yourself home the day after surgery????? I am having my surgery 9-22-08 at 12noon and I think I might have to drive myself home....If my schedule time is not changed. I live 1hour away from the hosptial.

i live 4 hours away from my surgeon and was just going to take a cab back to the hotel afterwards but i was told "absolutely NOT". a family member or friend had to be present for me to leave. i ended up spending the night because it was included in my surgery price.

i would NOT have been able to physically drive that first day after surgery. i could barely sit up straight yet alone be off the pain meds long enough for even a half hour!

NO NO NO!!! not unless you stay overnight. You are still under the effects of anesthesia and pain meds and may hurt yourself and/or someone else. Either tell your doc and spend the night at the hospital, or wait until someone can come get you.

I wouldn't suggest it. The hospital I was at wouldn't allow it. The anesthesia may not be out of your system and you will also be on pain medication. It just isn't safe. Please try to find someone to drive you.

I don't have an answer for you but I'm wondering about the same! I'll be home for a few days after surgery so that's not a problem but I have to make a 5 hour drive to get back to where I live now (insurance is through my mom in NC, but I live around DC - gotta go home to get surgery. Boo). Hopefully that'll be doable.

Thanks All, I will be staying overnight at the hosptial. My Doctor has all of his lapbanders stay overnight. So, I was thinking that I will be released the next day after 12noon. I know driving is not a good idea, also I was thinking about taking a cab home. I have more than a week to decide. Thanks again.

wow an hour long cab ride? I'll come take you for half that! LOL

seriously see if you can dig up someone to be with you. You'll need a little tending. Not a lot, but a little....

The hospital I went to would not dismiss you without someone else driving me home. It was a good thing too, cuz I was still pretty drowsy, and slept on the way back home.

You are not allowed to drive for a least 72 hours after general anesthesia. Even though you may feel fine, the anesthesia is still in your system slowing your reaction time down. You would be considered DUI if you would drive.

No, sorry you still have the affects of anesthesia. You will be groggy. My surgery center would not let you take a cab home either. Hope you are able to find some help. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
