I went to one of the educational seminars my doc does (have to do at least 3 of them) and during this one she focused on risks and talked some about taking aspirin and blood clotting, etc. When she was taking questions, I asked one which meant mentioning that I have the Leiden Factor V clotting problem. She not only didn't answer my question but jumped right on it saying that she had to sit down and have a special discussion with me. I am hoping having a clotting gene is not going to stop me from having this surgery, especially since I have never had a deep vein thrombosis episode or anything. Is there anyone else here with a problem like this that can shed some light for me?

Thanks!

I don't have it, but after googling "FVL and bariatric surgery" it seems in my VERY LIMITED explorations that you can have the surgery but they need to take additional steps to make sure you don't have clots or dvt or emboli post op. Bariatric patients by definition are at greater risk, as are you...and depending on your factors (it says to do a complete coag workup) standard precautions may not be enough; you may need a filter in your inferior vena cava to protect you. SO

I'm thinking she's going to want some extra blood work on you etc.

Again...I don't know, of course, just did some quick research. Hopefully someone can post who has 1st hand knowledge. When is your appt with the surgeon?

Everything I was finding was about bypass, so I am glad you found out more than I did. I don't know when I meet the surgeon yet. So far I know that I go to a support group meeting next week and do my multi hour informational class on the 26th. I guess it will be then that I find out Octobers schedule of things I have to do. I am hopeful that not having a history of DVT's and it only being heterozygous (gene only came from one parent, not both which means the percentages aren't as high as some of clots) will work in my favor.

Thank you.

I THINK for the purposes of recovery, RNY and the band are comparable...RNY may take a little longer but not much, and it's done laparoscopically, too. The point is obesity and anesthesia, I think...not necessarily the specific procedure. But again, I'm just guessing. I hope I'm right and she'll just do some blood work and find out you aren't at a higher risk and it won't hold you up at all!

AND call and get an appt. to discuss it!! She told you she wanted to meet with you about it....so you should be able to get in to see her.

If she wants additional tests OR if for some reason she doesn't feel able to do your surgery, you would need to find out sooner rather than later, right? Good luck to you! I know it will all work out fine for you!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
