Need to gain weight!!!!

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys for all your help and well-wishes. I'm so close to the BMI of 40 and I've been 40 before I just actually tried to lose weight on my 6 month diet and now I'm being denied the surgery because I'm below. It's actually really sad that I'm being punished and have to end up punishing my body so I can not go into an insane amount of debt (not to mention to add to my college loans) just so I can get this tool to become healthier. I just made my appt yesterday *because of heartburn being worse* and thought this would be a great opportunity to get the weigh in and send that in with my appeal...that way I don't gotta go back again between classes, reading and work getting into the dr is a hard task thanks again everyone for your support and suggestions :)

Drink lots of Water the day of the appointment, and eat a large meal the night before and the morning of the appointment - those would have been my suggestions, had I seen this thread last night. :rolleyes2:

Good luck today!

I agree that it does it to me everytime... Lots of wine and salt.. Or you could just have margaritas with TONS of salt or Bloody mary's haha.

You're gonna have a hang over at the doc but fun doing it. You could also eat lots of sunflower seeds in the shell avoid Water until after the appt. In the car in the parking lot of the doc office eat a combo meal supersized! LOL

Oh and rolls of quarters weigh 7.5 ounces so put 2 of those in your pocket for a good 1.5 pounds or wear ankle weights.

My BMI was only 36 and I was still approved for the surgery. Do you have any co-morbidities - such as sleep apnea, thryoid problems, high cholesterol, depression? My surgery was approved based on having these problems (insurance is Carefirst Blue Choice.).

I was under on the morning I was going to get weighed as well. I had been above the whole time while waiting but for some freak reason, that morning, I was under.

I wore heavy clothes (jean material and hoodies weigh alot). I also found heavy shoes, and drank a ton of Water the whole morning before my appointment.

If you do that, you are not adding extra pounds that you will have to lose later.

Chinese food...lots of sodium, soy sauce the night before. Drink a ton of Water the day of the weigh in and eat a huge meal on your way to the clinic. Don't go to the bathroom before you weigh. I had to gain 7 lbs. to get to 40 BMI and I made it by .1 lb.

For me it was the difference between $2000 or $18000. We pay for insurance and should be able to use it. For those that think it's mis-leading or dis-honest - it's not...you need to understand the frustrations of 15 years of being between 35-40 BMI and not being able to lose weight and keep it off.

Why should we not have the opportunity to get the surgery paid for? My family doctor would agree 100%. He thinks the insurance game is a joke and that we low BMI people should be able to get the surgery paid for by insurance if the Dr. recommends it.

Just venting....

Good luck to everyone.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
