I'm considering getting an IUD after surgery (since my annual out of pocket max will have been reached post op, I won't have to pay the $500 DME deductible for the IUD).

What do bariatric docs think about the IUD? Do they prefer you be on the pill? Or is an IUD just as good?

The IUD is not fool proof. It works about 97% of the time. I just had a baby while using the IUD for 3 years. I even had it checked by my OB/GYN two months before I got pregnant!

Something to consider too, Katie - IUD's slightly increase the chance of infections, which can have disastrous long term effects. I had an IUD put in after I had my daughter, which got infected a couple of years later. I had it removed but it was too late by then - the infection had moved into my fallopian tubes and scarred them closed. The doctors did try to surgically correct it but were unsuccessful and I was never able to have children naturally after that. I am thankful that I had my baby before I did this, as I can't imagine my life without her but do regret not having more kids.

Hi there,

I do not want to be a naysayer, but I am against IUD's after my daughter's experience with the Mirena IUD. She had severe abdominal pain, weight gain, depression, anxiety, etc. She had always been a very petite, happy-go-lucky, optimistic and carefree person until the Mirena. On top of that they recently found out it had perferated her uterine wall and it had become infected. Again, I do not want to be negative, and everyone reacts differently to different drugs, etc. but I urge you to do some thorough research before considering it.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I agree it's different for everyone. But, I have never had children and I am 24 and have an IUD. It was the best thing my partner and I could have done for us. I have had no problems. But again everyone reacts differently.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
