Strange Pain Question

Recommended Posts

Hi---

I possibly have a strange pain question. I'm a little more than a month post-op and my doctor has had me off of my acid reflux meds since a week after surgery. For the past four days, I've been woken up (around 3am or 4am) by an uncomfortable feeling in the middle of my chest that makes it feel funny to breathe. If I get up, walk around and take a few deep breaths, it goes away and I can lay back down. Now I did call the doctor's office after the first night fearing that something was horribly wrong. The answer I got was, well, did you eat something too late? did you have any caffeine before going to bed? Are you drinking too fast? I couldn't honestly answer (how sad that I couldn't remember the caffeine but I had eaten dinner at 7:30pm). But I know for a fact the past few nights I've eaten early and didn't have any caffeine and I'm still having the issue. In fact I had it tonight while I was taking a test during class. So I think I've eliminated all of his thoughts. Could my reflux be back and when it comes back up and hits the band I get the pain? Is this gas?? Has anyone else had any problems like this?? Any insight is greatly appreciated!! Sorry this is so long!!!

I have not had reflux, but it sounds like something is happening. I suggest you call back the office and tell them that this is still occuring and you are not eating late nor having caffeine. They probably will put you back on your meds.

Search on the site for esophageal spasm and see if your symptoms are similar. Regardless, if it continues for a total of a week, ask your dr.

well...i called the office again and the nurse went through the questions to which i replied that i'm not doing anything to cause this. she told me to follow up with my family doc...which i'm ironically doing this coming monday...to see if he thinks i should start back on my acid reflux meds. oh well only a couple more nights of this at the very least. but she did suggest i try chewing some tums or something and that might give me an answer.

but thanks again!!! and maybe this will help someone else out. i've gotten so many tips and tricks from being here!

I am glad you got some answers. I would call your primary and ask them if you could have a prescription until you see him on Monday. THis way you don't have to suffer over the weekend.

Good Luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
